You can't use acquired picks on an offer sheet. They have to be your own, so these deals don't technically change their ability to throw a contract at an RFA. Of course, giving up your first and second rounders on an offer sheet hurts a bit less when you have other picks in the same rounds.

They would have had no picks after making an offer sheet. These moves cover the bases as they have #24 and #50. You downgrade picks but you potentially upgrade the snot out of of your C depth.

I don't understand all the hand wringing about Vancouver and the number one pick? Florida has said they will only make the deal if that improves them right now. They want players that can play and contribute right now. That does not sound like a bunch of draft picks in a poor draft to me. Unless Vancouver coughs up Tanev or another player that will improve the Panthers right now, I just don't see this working out they way some are expecting. I still expect a deal to happen, but it's going to be for assets that improve the Panthers and weaken the Canucks.

^ Also offer sheets would involve 2015 draft picks.

Can they afford to give up Tanev now after getting rid of Garrison?

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see a deal involving Tanev and the #1 OA.

FLA has said they want players that can play now. A group of 3-4 draft picks isnt going to get it done I dont think.

If the choice is between their pick and a group of picks they think they'll get better collective value from it will. However, I don't think that's the choice, because Vancouver isn't the only party trying to get their pick off of them.

Maybe Campbell coming to Van in a deal for #1? Not sure what Van is doing here but it is fascinating. Are they going full tank with the Sedins on board or planning a big trade and ufa? Fun times.

They're doing what the Flames should have done 2 years before they did - start the rebuild in earnest.

The thought is Corrado is at the same point as Tanev while being younger and more offensive upside, so that may be it.

That would make my day if they do they might as well of hired feaster seems like their gm is steering their franchise in the same direction as feaster. Just need a few debacles to really embarrass them.

That's kind of my point. Can they? That's the type of player that Florida is going to want. Tanev and #6 for #1 seems like the minimum. I don't think that is a great deal for Vancouver. I just don't see any of the top four players being that franchise guy you normally get with a top pick. This is an Oiler quality top pick. Who ever it is will be a good player, but I just don't see a player that is going to be the cornerstone of a franchise. Better off to take a player at #6 and build from there IMO.

This is a good trade for Vancouver. I hope they don't use their new picks to move up to #1, 2 or 3.

Tanev is just a guy. If he had been a drafted player instead of an out of nowhere undrafted guy he wouldn't be talked about. He's basically a rich man's Chris Butler. If that is what it takes to move from 6 to 1... then you do it every day of the week.

Tampa has really taken on some salary lately, their roster looks pretty much complete, but the payroll is through the roof. Add in the buy outs and they have to be second only to Philly in salaries paid. Looking at the east though I think they should be one of the favorites, but not even top 10 in the league?

Meh.
Vancouvers prospect pool is pretty crappy... they have Horvat (who's good) and Shinkaruk (who's just ok regardless of how much their fans overrate him) and pretty much nothing else of note. I almost think they'd be better served with #6 and the extra bullets they just got then putting all their eggs in one basket.
If your hope is based on what it does to the Flames in the draft then as far as I'm concerned it makes no difference. The three forwards (Leon and the Sams) are all pretty close in overall talent (personally I have a slight preference for Bennett but only slight) so I'd basically just shrug regardless of who they chose because we'd be getting someone pretty much just as good anyways.
