Confidence issue is a cop out

Quote:
"That can be a little bit of an excuse," Stempniak said after the Calgary Flames’ 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers in National Hockey League action Tuesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome. "We’re all in the NHL because we’re good players. Ultimately, you just have to believe in yourself and believe that you’re capable of getting the job done. Certainly, you feel a little bit better if you’ve been scoring.

"But to me, (the confidence issue) is a little bit of a cop-out. I think you have to take ownership of it and be ready for the next opportunity that comes."
Giordano talks about the loss

Quote:
"It’s tough because I think we’re playing well but we’re not scoring goals," said Mark Giordano. "We have to find a way to get some. I mean, all of us, myself included, we’re not finishing. We’re getting some pretty good looks and it’s not going in for whatever reason. But we can’t get away from our defensive game. I think we’re pretty solid in our own zone, pretty good positionally.

"I thought we played a good game. A few breakdowns cost us, obviously. They got some goals around the net and we have to be better at creating more."
Hartley thinks the effort is there

Quote:
"I felt they were more opportunistic than us around the net, tips," said Flames skipper Bob Hartley. "We had some chances. I’ll give credit to our players. We went to the blue paint tonight. We did lots of great things around the net, but we couldn’t get that big goal. I think (Schenn’s) goal late in the second period kind of hurt us. I felt we were getting good momentum, we were skating better and that goal — I felt it on the bench — we took a big hit from that.

"We kept working, but we just couldn’t get back in the game."

Hartley says we need to support them

Quote:
“We need to support them. They're working. No one makes a bad read or a bad pass on person,” Hartley said. “The one thing we will not accept is a lack of effort, and that's definitely not the case.

“We did lots of great things around the net, but we couldn't get that big goal. I think their second goal, late in the second period, kinda hurt us. I felt that we were getting good momentum, we were skating better, and that goal seemed to – on the bench – we took a big hit. We kept working but just couldn't get back in the game.”
Need to score more goals

Quote:
“We're getting better, giving up fewer goals on a whole, but tonight we made a couple of mistakes and they capitalized on each one,” Stempniak said. “Then, the same old story, it's tough to win games when you only score one goal.”

You know, NHL scouts and GMs don't evaluate players based on the most recent 10-game sample.

How about a recent 25 game sample?

Do you think he will get a second then?

Based on his age, contract, and career track record, Stempniak has never really been worth much more than a second round pick. This year he might still get a 2nd next year or 3rd this year and another late round pick. No one on the Flames over 30 save Gordano and maybe Glencross will get a first round pick.

That effort was good enough to beat the Oilers, but that's about it. An improvement on the last two games, but not nearly enough.

I think Kerr said in the pregame that Wideman is back on Friday? If so, I hope that last night was Derek Smith's last game as a Flame. He was responsible for two of the goals against.

Also, I didn't mind the idea, in theory, of putting Westgarth and McGrattan on separate lines. Except, you know, they needed to be throwing the body more. We needed those two to wear down a tired Flyers team, and it didn't happen.

I agree with this, you can have them on seperated lines but for heavens sake hit someone! If they think their presence scares the other team they're wrong, they will just skate around them like last night. You have to wear the opposition down and make them look over their shoulder going into the corners. That's where mistakes get made and you capitalize on those mistakes.

Effort is there but there is skill on the team and it isn't being shown.

Starting to? I still love my Flames but it's been over a year the last time I watched a full game.

Couple part timers I see. If you don't watch full games then quit complaining.

Nobodies complaining, why continue watching a game if we're losing 3-0 into the 3rd?

One of the most ignorant things I've read on here in a while. I don't get to watch a lot of games and the ones I do, I don't usually watch full games either. That doesn't make us any less of fans. I follow the flames and they are my favourite team, there games aren't that interesting because they suck this year. I still watch when I can but I don't go out of my way to watch them. It doesn't make me any less of a fan.

This team is terrible and needs a lot of work.

1.) That's because you're not interested enough in the team to find a stream or listen to 960 to follow play by play. Yeah, I get it, we suck - and lately we're sucking particularly hard. It's just annoying to see the fans who are concerned with only winning pretend they're 'real' & 'genuine'. It's even more silly to see them defend themselves with "I follow the Flames & they're my favourite team"; well yeah, you're on CP and not HFboards.

2.)Actually, yeah it does.

The more dedicated fans are the ones you see in the GT threads swearing and cursing everything that goes wrong right until the final horn sounds, then spend a half hour or more posting sad gifs and rage in the PGT and armchair GM'ing. Why? Because they give a ####.

I'm guessing you missed the 3rd period of the St. Louis game then. 3-1, but still.

Because you can score 3 goals in a period. That's just my point, you're giving up and then bashing them without watching the whole 60 minutes.

I've got an 8 month old son, a sick wife, we're moving and have family in town for the holidays. The fact I can follow at all show dedication. Hockey is great and all but someday you might realize there are more important things in life

Yeah, that's understandable. Just don't throw yourself in with the diehards; especially after dropping this bomb:

To see if they come back, to see how individual guys perform, because you like watching hockey.
