Who knows? Maybe Katz had a man crush on the kid.

To answer @FriedgeHNIC's on air question, re: Yakupov vs Murray, and I suspect he knew answer: Yes, majority of EDM scouts wanted Murray.

Decision to take Yakupov came from a higher authority. That's not indictment of decision, only saying how it was arrived at.
My guess would be that Katz vetoed Murray because he wanted Yak. But who knows, might be on Lowe too.

I think we all know which "higher authority" overruled the scouts:
He was on the cover! He had to go #1.

haha high octane offense. I haven't heard that term in a long time, probably since the year after their once in a decade playoff appearance. remember that moron Sean McCormick or "Big Dude" or whatever his name was, the grease worshipper that used to jockey the SportsNet desk? I remember him predicting 400+ goals for the Oil during that period.
oh and have their radio guys tweeted anymore comparisons between Stamkos and Yak's first bunch of games? why has that gone silent too all of a sudden?

Toronto looks terrible in their own end, and you have to wonder what happens if they fall out of a playoff spot, do they try to deal Phaneuf at the deadline to make sure that they get something for a guy that's going to be highly sought after?
And how would leaf fans react to that.
|
After the bloom wore off, Leaf fans have had a love-hate relationship with Dion. I think they would want to trade him if they fall out of contention. Problem is, unless you are Buffalo, then you simply aren't out of contention in that conference.
As to Philly, losing Brayden Schenn hurts a bit. No idea what the hell that Wilson kid was thinking when he chose to make that charge.

The Perron trade reminds me of a lot of Feaster trades. In a vacuum it looks good (mainly because of how bad MPS is) but really it does nothing to improve the team.
Perron is a one-dimensional soft player who brings nothing but offense and stupid penalties. The Oilers are a team of one dimensional soft forwards so adding another doesn't improve them at all.
Sure the Perron for MPS looks like a decent value move but in the end the Oilers are no better or worse after the deal was made.

re the Yakupov pick...
Most everything that I have read says that Lowe vetoed the scouts and chose him instead.
A well connected friend (feel free to consider it Orange-Julius-esque, but he is very well connected and I respect his sources) claims that Katz made the Yakupov call and that Lowe is lying on the grenade for him.
If true, that only solidifies Lowe's position-for-life, which is fantastic news for Flames fans.

yeah I have read multiple times that it was Katz. Quite possible if you ask me. I think one scenario that makes a lot of sense is that MacTavish had his fingers in there ... he was hired as Senior VP of Hockey Ops only a few days before the draft. MacTavish convincing Katz of taking Yakupov perhaps? I mean why would you veto all your scouts if you trust them?

What I think is hilarious is that it is impossible for the Oilers to pass the Flames before Christmas. That has to absolutely piss oiler fans off. I keep waiting for them to do something but they have pissed away half the season. The second half of the season we will probably see them tank like no team has tanked before because that is what they are good at.
For the CP poster who made the deal that the Oilers would not finish 15 points ahead of the Flames, you might be able to cash that in around the Olympics.

Taylor Hall even sounds like he's getting bored of it. Players are going to be jumping ship pretty soon demanding trades and such.
