If the Leafs are "the best team ever" would it not follow that Phaneuf is the best defense-man of all-time?
He's not as bad as some are suggesting, but the hyperbole the other way is pretty ridiculous too.
edit: I see you clarified, you're not actually calling them "elite".

If we could get him for 2-3 yrs for 6 or under i'd take Phaneuf back on the Flames.

This elite thing gets tossed around way too much. PITS is elite, CHI is elite, TOR is not. Not yet anyways. If they win a cup or even make a final or two, win several presidents trophy's then lets talk. 8-4 in 12 games, come on.

I misread the post I was quoting; I thought the article was calling the Leafs an elite team.

Halloween 2012 the Leafs were second in the East with a 7-3 record, Edmonton was second in the West with a 7-2-2 record. Toronto ended up drafting 5th overall and Edmonton ended up drafting 1st overall. Let's hold up on calling a team that finished 2 points above 8th place (and first time making the playoffs in a decade) last year anything before all the teams have played 10 games.
And still even if Toronto does end up being a good team this year, all good teams have holes. We've seen starters on elite teams not be elite goalies very often, so an elite team doesn't have to have an elite #1 defenseman.

No doubt that Phaneuf has flaws but he is a dynamic player who was fun although sometimes frustrating to watch, and there was no questioning his competitiveness, heart and desire. The Flames went downhill fast when he left. I don't mind Wideman but I don't see many similarities in their game. Wideman is a player who has a good shot and thinks the game well enough that it makes up for being a below-average skater and not having a lot of skill. Having said that, I don't think Phaneuf's a good fit for the flames at 7m per season, and Wideman is having a good year.

Basically with the new CBA teams won't let good players go as UFAs since they know they can't plug those holes with other UFAs, which in turn means good players will almost never go UFA.
So the Leafs basically need to sign him. Let's face it he's a run-of-the-mill 40 point defenseman who is average defensively, logs big minutes and has a physical side. He isn't worth close to $7 million/year but he'll likely get his 6.5 again simply because the Leafs can't afford to lose him.
Him and Kessel at $15 million/year is going to cripple that organization. Both good players but neither the kind of guy you want to build a team around.

6.68 is close to 6.8 though.

Phaneuf, Rankings, 13/14:
Points (6): 22nd
Goals (2): 8th
+/- (+6): 13th
Hits (35): 5th
Blocks (24): 24th
Mins (24:30): 21st
QoC (+3.9): 1st
And some of you honestly don't think he's a #1 guy? Let's be serious.
On Saturday night, he completely shutdown the world's best player. no other player has done that in the NHl this year.

And he did it all by himself! He waved all the other Laffs back to the bench and said watch this!
Get your hand out of your pants and back to reality.

You're really going to throw up rankings after 12 games? Really?
And he didn't become the first player to shut down Crosby all season. The Leafs used 5 players against Crosby (Gunnarson, Bolland, Raymond, and Clarkson were the others). Phaneuf certainly played a part but he didn't do it by himself.
And it was the second time Crosby was held off the scoresheet this year, not the first.
Your Leafs fanboi hyperbole is bordering insanity.

No, it's much better to say "Phaneuf Sucks!". More credible.
He played by far the most against Crosby. And yes, he was the only player to shut him down who shadowed him the entire game. Crosby had close to a 2.0 PPG avg going into the game. He was limited to 3 shots.

His point was you said he was the first "player" which would seem to indicate you claiming he did it on his own.

He shadowed Crosby all night.
Dion faces the toughest competition in the entire Nhl. this isn;t anything new. If he was half as bad as the majority say, the Leafs would be terrible.

Haha. This 'BigTuna' character is worse than a Jets or Rider fan with his inferiority complex when it comes to his team.
Surprised he/she hasn't started a "Rank The Canadian Teams" thread yet.
