Flames shut out the Canucks 5-0. In the post-game presser Botchford, oblivious to Tortorella's foul mood, asks "So what went wrong, coach?" and takes both barrels in reply. Larry Brooks, on the other side of the continent, feels some relief that Botchsy is Torts new whipping boy - that is, until AV snaps the ever-present chewing gum in his face.

Meanwhile, up in Old Dutchland Marks has put their fleece-lined sweatpants on sale and three die in the resulting stampede.

Canucks will be expecting an easy win, and will be giving even less effort than that which they needed to pound the Oilers, so I expect the Flames to catch them off-guard and play a solid 50 minutes.

I worry about the other 10 minutes, though.

Realistically the goaltending matchup is therefore more or less even as both goalies probably have similar blow-up potential. This is an absolute trap game for the Canucks given that they're coming off a rather leisurely win last night and it's a back to back on a Sunday on the road. It's not unreasonable to call a Flames win. I'm saying 3 point game, 3-3 tie that goes to a shootout and as usual we flip a coin.

Way different team than before, but I don't think the Flames are historically good when playing against rookie goalies. Would have preferred seeing the known quantity in Lou.

Oh great, a rookie goalie getting his first start against the Flames. Congrats on the win Vancouver, probably a shut out too.

Any rookie forwards looking for their first goal?

3-2 Flames, goals from Stempniak (2) & Giordano. Sven & Monahan with 2 assists each.

Excited for tonight! I've been to a lot of games over the years but I don't think I have ever been to a home opener.

My guess is 4-2 Flames.

Didn't Horvat and Shinkurak make the team?

No, after they traded for Zac Dalpe - who is now their 4C - both were sent back to the CHL. Dalpe's currently playing about 4 minutes a night, so it's probably better for Shinkaruk and Horvat that they're getting 20-25 minutes in junior, but still. The Canucks have a defenseman playing forward right now in the first week of the season. Just fantastic roster management by the brass there. Go Gillis!

Kassian/Burrows are both still taking up roster spots right now, they would have to send down (and likely lose) a D man on waivers to make a spot

4th line is playing in the 4-7 minute range, really no point to not play a d man there

I would love to have to worry about a couple of junior players

It's interesting reading on the Canucks' message board how certain Canucks fans are recognizing the energy the Flames have been playing with so far. Many of them are rather guarded with predictions for the game.

So when they lose tonight, the Canucks will blame the rookie goaltender?

Too bad Cammalleri isn't in the lineup for this game. He always shows up against Vancouver.

I felt much more confident against the Oilers last night than tonight, not just because of the B2B

a team that is playing with energy is more dangerous to the Canucks than one who plays 'defense' like the Oilers

Shootout loss. Let's say 3-4.
