That is what freedom is. If they were what they want to, by choice, no one should care. If they are being forced to do something in this country, yes step and and give them freedom, but don't tell them what to do.
Also are the PQ going to make the city of Montreal take down that giant, illuminated cross on Mount Royal? Are they going to make Carey Price remove the cross on the back of his helmet?

I'm still confused.
I have yet to ever see someone in a burqa in real life, ever.

I just googled what France did, and apparently its 367 woman in France that were affected. Its in a Guardian article, googled how many woman in France wear burka. Really this is something to rally the base (for PQ, everyone outside of Montreal), not to really change anything.

Just because you don't like religion doesn't mean you have to be disrespectful and ignorant. You might need god in your life.

I like you T@t, but this post really makes me shake my head. I know that there's probably a green text here. But not everyone shares your kind of views on religion and spirituality, and your post is kind of disrespectful to them.

Ummm..no! "GOD" is an imaginary entity made up by humans in power to control weak humans, fact is I feel I'm a better "homo sapien" to humanity than 90% of religious people. So... No! I don't need a fairy tale.

I'm thinking you both need a little humor in your life, as much as I do dislike the idea of religion..it was still a joke...hence the "big grin" smiley over green text.

Actually, I always thought it would be really cool to convert an old cathedral into a nightclub. Think of what you could do with the pipe organ!
Keep it upscale of course. You don't need bikini clad cowgirls selling body shots.
I don't mean it as an affront to any religion, buildings and how they are used evolve or change over time. There are many 'sacred' sites that have since become museums, tourist sites (traps even), clubs, or even just disappeared into dust. It really pretty natural.
As for the religious symbol thing, it's a silly thing for the PQ to get involved in, but they like to meddle, we all know that. They are also very culturally insular.
However, I do have a soft spot to the debate. Occasionally, the religious or cultural communities in our countries can be as oppressive as where they originated from. Sometimes it's hard to tell if the person wearing restrictive clothing (say like a burqa) really wants to be, or does it because they are forced to in their own community under threat of being disowned, violence, or even death.
Human rights still get violated. It's something to keep an eye on. Although I know it's not the right answer, sometimes I feel like it would just be easier to ban some of the more extreme examples. But then, that of course becomes a near impossible line to draw. And I do believe in the freedom of religion and freedom of expression/speech.
Also I have a hard time with the whole obstruction of the face in ID's. What's the point of the ID?

These laws are going too far, I support fully any religious person to wear their religious attire and would protest this as much as protesting creation being taught in public schools.
These guys are giving secularists a bad name.

Yeah I don't get the big deal as it wasn't a serious post. That fact that some people get all up in arms over it shows why religion is the cause of so many problems on this planet. One would think the human species would have evlolved past worshipping fictional characters. I don't dislike religion (you can believe in the tooth fairy and Stanta for all I care) as much as I feel it's holding back the human race from evolving.

On CBC, they had some batshat crazy (white) french lady saying:
"We give in to everyone. In 10 years, we'll all be wearing turbans because they'll be in charge."

When I said "batshat crazy" I really meant to say "ignorant and racist".
My bad.

There are however growing validity to theories suggesting religion is an evolutionary benefit for early human survival and even us thriving.

Heard this is already starting to bite the PQ in the butt. Could be a win win scenario down the road.
Worst case scenario they push the law through, and the Supreme Court strikes it down. But it's looking more and more that it's going to cost the PQ and their going to have to back down anyway.

Sorry, I should clarify. It wasn't meant to be dickish. I meant it as: Religion isn't the reason our species hasn't grown wings or super vision

To me the Hijab is more about modesty than opression. Similar to Male Orthodox Jewish atire or Catholic nuns attire. Headgear becomes opressive when it strips a persons identity so the Niqab and Burka are highly opressive. I am comfortable with that stance as being reasonalbe and not prejudiced against one particular religion but drawing a line where religion in general becomes opressive.
This law is so well crafted by the PQ because it allows them to create the Us against Them fear group that is neccessary to convince people to make decisions that are against their self interest.
I wonder if this bans all symbols like christmas trees on christmas sweaters.
On the knife issue with the Sikh religion I am okay with it provided the daggers are sowen shut of they cannot be deployed.

I'm not sure what that means, but maybe if they make the blades out of rubber, like rubber spatula thing.
