The airport is a long way from downtown. You may even be cheaper to rent a car for a day, might want to check cab rates.

I was very lucky to marry into a Cape Breton family, and enjoy going East every summer. I realize you've already gone but if anyone else is going to Halifax and has a European background, Pier 21 is a great experience. I went on a tour and they talked about the European immigration and what the journey across the sea was like. I went into the records office and found a copy of my Grandparents and Mothers departure papers from the port of Southampton. Seeing my families names ... my Mom being written in as age 4... it was all pretty incredible.
I'll give another recommendation for Ingonish and Cape Breton in general. It's Canada's most incredible Island, the food people and scenery are second to none.

Looked into it and they have a bus that leaves everyone hour for a few bucks. That bus takes up to an hour apparently. Cab cost around $60 each way. A direct shuttle can be had for $21.
I am not adverse to taking the bus from the airport given the time I have.

If the weather sucks the Maritime museum is a nice diversion, as is the Sackville. You can tour that ship in about 30 minutes if you are into that. Both no the harbour.

You can spend a few hours in Peggy's Cove, not far from Halifax. It has nice scenery and you can hike around in the rocks (stay off the black rocks though, as they say). Alexander Keith's brewery tour is an option, but we got their too late to do it. I had seen enough citadels and fortresses so I skipped that, but my wife and kids said it was good. The old burial grounds was kind of cool, if you are into the gothic 18th century graveyards.
The Maritime Museum is actually pretty cool. You can spend a few hours or more in there learning about various shipwrecks and the Halifax explosion. Last year they had quite a bit of Titanic items on display as well.

Argyle Street has become a bit gentrified in the last few years, but there are still a lot of excellent late-night pubs to get smashed at.
The Loose Cannon, Durty Nelly's and the Foggy Goggle are always lots of fun.
The oysters. THE OYSTERS. Five Fisherman has an excellent cucumber vinagrette for their oysters, though the place itself is overpriced and fake high-end.

When I went back to Halifax for the first time after moving out here, I was outside the liquor dome and asked a police officer if I jay-walked across to the hot dog stand if he would give me a ticket. He laughed and asked why the hell he would do that, to which I said it's a common occurrence in Calgary. He laughed and said, "Don't the cops out there have better things to do with their time".

Durty Nelly's is a great place. I never remember leaving. I look forward to hitting it up on Saturday night.

This is a nice little bump. I love bragging about this little piece of Heaven.
If you're looking for a place along the Cabot Trail here are a few suggestions:
- Cabot Shores is the hotel attached to Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses. Cabot Cliffs is rated the top golf course in Canada, #19 in the world. The view is amazing.
- If that's a little pricey for you (it is for me) the Glenora Distillery has cabins, and not to mention whiskey.
- The Keltic Lodge is legendary, and just received a major renovation. It's the resort for the Highlands Links golf course, the top public course in the country.
- Ingonish Chalets are also nice and not as pricey as the rest. Friends of mine say there every year. Depending on our schedule we grab a cabin there too.
- If you're looking to stay in the Sydney area, Hampton Inn in Membertou is a great hotel, as is the Cambridge Suites on the waterfront.
If you didn't book your flights already, you should look into flying into Halifax and out of Sydney or vice-vera.
In terms of places to drink in Sydney: Breton Brewery is my favorite spot, but Governors and Old Triangle are also great places to grab a beer.
In Halifax, Dirty Nelly's, Lower Deck, Old Triangle are all great places to have a pint. Garrison Brewery is also fun.
Feel free to PM me and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions/give advice.

Going to hijack this thread for my own gain now that I have decided I will be in Halifax for two days. I am with my wife, I want to try as many different craft beers as possible but she isn't a beer drinker. She enjoys touring things, I enjoy fishing, anyway to combine those two?
Hrmm this thread is making me want to drive that trail, but I just don't think we would have time for both. Sussex to Breton looks to be a full day drive, about the same distance as Saskatoon to Calgary but probably not as fast of a drive with the boring plains allowing you to basically fall asleep. So that would be our entire Thursday, get somewhere in the area Thursday night.. spend part of Friday driving the trail then down into Halifax, and have Friday night/Saturday/Sunday (flight doesn't leave till 7:30 PM Sunday) in Halifax. We could also drive part of the way Wednesday night.. if there is a good place to stop halfway or so between for food and drinks.
