Isn't this a major con for lake communities. It costs more to buy into a lake community so if you arent' going to use the lake you are paying interest on something that you don't need.

I think that when I was looking it was about 25k more for similar houses in lake comunities. In the end I chose lower cost for a similar house and proximity to fish creek over a lake. 25k at 3.5% is $875 per year plus your $250 lake fee is up to 1125 for the cost of a lake.

So taking two identical communities one with a lake and one without you have to get $1125 per year of more value out of the lake for that community to be better. So having a lake is not OBJECTIVELY better than not having one.

Just driving by Arbour Lake I can see why you would think that and I used to share that opinion, but I actually spent an afternoon there one time and realized it was still fun. A lake doesn't have to be huge to be be enjoyable - the beach was nice and they had kind of a Mexican resort vibe going on with music, dancing, etc. when I was there. Go across the street to see what the residents of Hawkwood are up to and you'll maybe see two guys flying a kite in a mosquito-infested field. Made me realize just how nice these lakes are for a community, regardless of the size.

The idea of "best" neighbourhood is kind of dumb. Every individual values different things in their neighbourhood depending on family situation, income, amenities required, line of work they're in, etc.

With that said, give me my condo in Marda Loop (South Calgary ranked #40 on the list) and it's easy access to downtown, shopping, dining, rivers, parks, etc. any day of the week over Arbour Lake with it's access to a large puddle.

1. 8 minutes to downtown by car

2. Close to Edsworthy Park, dogwalk, Dounglas Fir Trail, bike paths and
Bow River

3. Developed in late 50's and many upgrades and redevelopment since.

3. Close to LRT

4. Tremendous Community Association and community spirit

5. Excellent tree growth

6. Great access to Stoney Trail and Trans Canada Highway going west and north

7. Close to schools

8. Low crime rate

9. Good access to shopping - Westbrook Mall, Westhills and downtown

10. Public golf course nearby - Shaganappi

11. Etc

Wildwood has an awesome location but they have too many small old houses. Just like Brentwood. I wouldn't put Brentwood into the 20. and there is no way Arbour Lake is #1.

Yes but there is lots of space between the houses, and room to upsize as required. This monster house mentality these days, with houses squeezed together so tight you can reach out the window and touch the next house, is absolutely absurd IMO. You don't really need excessive amounts of space - it's just more to maintain. I've said it before, that no matter how small the available living space, it's only a short time before your brain will automatically adjust and make it comfortable.
