Matt Hendricks is also someone I would like the Flames to look at for a short term deal.

Pardon me for being optimistic but I earlier said for the playoffs and I also said we have little chance of signing those players.

No to Clarkson's asking price.

That asking price seems really high. Why would he fetch that kind of asking price?

No, perhaps not... but each team had a history of signing bigger UFA's even during their rebuilds.
2005 off season
-Draft Crosby first overall
-Sign UFA's Sergei Gonchar, Mark Recchi and Zigmund Palffy

Just a reminder that we have no proven goaltending, no proven top line scorer, no proven secondary scoring, a defense with more wholes than a block of Swiss cheese, and expect an influx of youth. That isn't a contender for anything but the first pick in next year's draft. I'm optimistic about the future of the team, but next season is going to be brutal. It should be fun to watch the kids develop, but it is going to be a long year with a lot of painful losses. Prepare for the pain!

Big, gritty, defensively responsible 20-30 goal wingers under the age of 30 don't come around the UFA market all that often. Considering Horton's injury history, Clarkson may be the most desirable UFA on the table this year. And considering Bryan Bickell just got $16 million over four years, and he isn't nearly as proven as Clarkson, you can see why someone is going to overpay.

If I am a player coming out of this lockout I wouldn't sign a long term deal. Worst possible year to be a UFA with the cap going down.
Sign for 3/4 years, and get another payday when the cap is going to be much higher in 3 years time.

I really want the flames to go out and get Raymond. Something like 4 year/12mil contract.

Clarkson would be a good addition but I would even be reluctant to do 4 years at $5 million per.
7 years at $6.5 million per is insane. That's pretty similar to Iginla's contract when he was in his prime...

Nobody at this point. I think the Flames need another Monahan at center and a top end d man. I think if we could draft one in next draft maybe next summer we make a push for the other. Any UFA's signed this summer will hurt our chances of getting that top notch d man or center in next draft. If we sign anyone it should be a cheap young player that can push the young ones we have. Guys that can replace guys like Cams who are younger and much cheaper

We've got lots of secondary scoring if not a top line scorer. Cammallari, Stempniak, Hudler, Glencross and Wideman are all proven scorers.
The defence is missing one top four man but otherwise is okay.
Yeah I'm going to enjoy watching the kids develop, even if they are bottom six again. I like their enthusiasm. It's something that was missing from our veteran teams for years. If we want to be a true contender we need a mix of veterans and youth. I just think that with a few top players we could contend for the playoffs this year. I don't believe we're going to get them though, so we'll never find out and so we're arguing in circles. The other thing is even if we got those players, it would only be a temporary fix so I agree it's better to take the long road and build properly. Their biggest weakness has been their size.
As for our goaltending, it can't be much worse than it was last season. Sad to say but Kipper was awful.

Don't want any of the high priced UFA's. Right now i am hoping the flames can pick up a young RFA top 4 dman or young dman with top 4 potential. Something along the lines of Cammi(half price) and a 2nd/3rd for young rfa dman.
The last i looked the flames still have a lot of forwards and i don't see a place for Horak or Reinhart. I have no problem with Reinhart in the AHL next year, but Horak deserves his chance.

I'm expecting somebody to pay at almost 5.5 per for Clarkson and considering this will be his biggest payout, lots of term to boot. As said he's probably the most attractive UFA so unfortunately that will make him too rich for what we can give.
Perhaps an older defenseman like Ference, move out Butler (probably just a fan pipe dream) and that would be considered a good summer. If Feaster is able to add a player that would grow with the team over the next 3 years, by all means go for it.

once again very little self control from GM's fishing for UFA's. The overpayment's that are coming is making the whole current contract buyout scenario's we are seeing with certain teams looking like a moronic exercise of redundancy.

Clarkson's asking price is absurd. I wouldn't even give him Hudler's contract. Take the Glencross discount, a one year deal for 4.5 mil or go somewhere else, please.
