I think signing two of Lecavalier, Horton or Clarkson could turn our team into a contender. If not able to do that, than yeah other than an inexpensive signing, allow the rebuild to happen.

Love to see Ference back here. Especially if it meant Butler was out. No forwards please, give the kids icetime and lets see what we've got.

I see Cammalleri being traded still. And could see us picking up another couple UFAs - center and D... but if we just trade Cammy for some prospects and don't add any UFAs, I wouldn't be shocked to see this as the starting lineup either (signing only our own RFAs):
Glencross - Stajan - Stempniak
Baertschi - Monahan - Backlund
Hudler - Knight - Jones
Bouma/Ferland - Reinhart - Jackman
Wideman - Giordano
Cundari - Brodie
O'Brien/Smith/Wotherspoon/Breen/Ramage
MacDonald/Berra/Ramo
If you add in a guy like Horton, Lecavalier, etc... it's going to bump either Reinhart Knight or Monahan off the team or to the wing bumping someone else. Can easily see we could use some help on D...
If the plan's to give some of the youth lots of icetime, this is the way to do it. Not sure how many games we win though...
I'd love to see one of Horton & Lecavalier here even if it's just to mentor the youth, but as above only if you're moving at least one of the other forwards out to keep some of the young guys in the lineup (or maybe Backlund's part of a trade to bring in a Dman?) As for defense, wouldn't mind a guy like Scuderi.

Hainsey was just awful last year for the Jets.
I wouldn't even want him as a #7 D on the Flames, plus he's 32. Staios 2.0.

The Flames definitely have a need for a d-man. Ference is at the top of my list because he is not only a solid d-man but also brings a lot of intangibles into the locker room. If not then going after a guy like Fistric or O'Byrne would be my second choice.
Up front I don't think the Flames should be targeting any long term deals. They should be looking for guys who want 1 or 2 year deals, who have had a bad season or 2 and are looking for playing time. These are the guys the Flames can flip at the deadline for a pick, adding assets for nothing and helping the rebuild along, while also creating competition for our young hockey players so they can develop properly. Perhaps a guy like Latendresse (I know I know another LW) or Chad LaRose or Ryan Jones fits the bill here.
Outside of that, there are probably some 25 year olds that the Flames will target for AHL depth. The Flames could use more depth at all positions except maybe in the crease right now.
Edit: I forgot to add, I totally expect the Flames to go hard after some RFA's who aren't qualified. I would not as all be shocked if the Flames targeted a guy like Jonathon Blum

Apparently, the Caps are letting Ribeiro go to free agency. I think he wants too much money and term for the Flames to bring on board.

I heard a rumour that Jarome is back in Calgary. I assume he is here to pack up the Iginla house for "greener pastures"
Interested to see where he ends up....I still think YVR.

UFAs they should look at signing:
Lecavalier or Filppula
Horton or Clarkson
Potential RFAs To Approach in Trades:
Alex Burmistrov
Chris Stewart
David Rundblad
Karl Alzner
Mikkel Boedker
A lot of mid-tier RFAs this year. Might be some potential to try and pick up some young guys who haven't quite worked out on their teams or may be wanting too much money.

I don't think I could bring myself to cheer for Ribeiro.

I hope the UFA period comes and goes with Feaster quietly sitting on his hands...2013 is NOT the year for spending in the UFA market for the Flames...have patience and let the kids play.
This season won't be pretty...we'll have to be content cheering for effort and youthful enthusiasm
Bringing in RFAs due for raises could make sense, though.

D: one of Clitsome/Ference/MAB
F: Boyd Gordon/David Steckel as a really good 4th line C/PKer (Don't think Reinhart is ready yet), Stalberg/Raymond as a speedy winger, maybe PMB or Roy if the price isn't too high (unlikely)

Signing all 3 doesn't even make them a contender...what a weird comment. The D and G position are still terribly sub par to expect any form of contention...the UFA market should be pretty well out-of-bounds for Feaster right now...and I think he knows it...he'll stupidly try for Vinny, but will come up short and dodge another bullet, Richards/Oreilly style.

Can see Vancouver, Montreal, and Ottawa interested in Clarkson.

I think Clarkson will be much too rich for Vancouver but I think Toronto is a definite option for him.

Flames need to pick up some decent players to help protect the young players.
Don't let the young guys just lose all confidence by getting destroyed every game. Look at past failures of Florida, NYI, Edmonton to show why that is not the best option.

Agreed, can't start building a culture where losing becomes okay because "hey, we're building something special...."

Yeah, not a contender for the cup but a contender for the playoffs, sure. I agree we have little chance of signing any of them though.
One more good defenceman would make us respectable there. I wouldn't call the goalie position sub par yet. We don't know what we have.

I would be very happy if the Flames tried to put an offer sheet forward or trade for Rundblad's rights. Burmistrov would be interesting too if the Jets are willing to move on from him.

CHI and PIT were always amazing too, right?!?!?
Those teams listed made terrible asset management decisions, their issues did NOT stem from UFA inactivity.
