I pray you are right because I have no doubt Ekblad will be better than Jones.

Yeah I could see this one getting rigged under the table to help some struggling US team/market that's bottom 5-7, especially if McDavid is as good as he appears to be to this point.

I could see philly, New York, or New Jersey getting him if it is rigged. It is funny to think that a team like Pittsburgh got such a rush of talent in the span of 3 years: Crosby, malkin, Staal, fleury, Letang... What timing for a team in dire need of superstars.
Under the new CBA, doesn't the team that finished last still only have like ~15% chance of winning the lottery. While they may have the best chance of any team, the odds are still stacked against them.

25%.
The Avs won the lottery with I believe 18% odds.

Can you imagine if the Flames actually drafted McDavid? I won't even allow myself to consider it as it'll just set myself up for disappointment. These things never happen to the Flames.

Don't know a lot about Ekblad, but what are you basing this on?

I think we just need to be top 3 next year to have a realistic chance.
Basically 60% chance it falls to one of those 3 teams.

I don't remember if the last draft lottery was done live (with balls in a drum) or if the winner was just revealed from a pre-sealed envelope (hence the rigging)...

The NHL has never had a live draft lottery. Even the Crosby sweepstakes of 2005 broadcasted only the results.

If I remember correctly I think it was done live on TSN with a representative from each of the bottom five teams in attendance. I think it was envelopes but not 100%

I think the Flames have a great chance at landing McDavid..I don't see them being any better next year than this year at all. We're going to lose a few players and have a few new players that are probably worse then the ones we lose. We're probably goign to be talking about trading Glencros next year (if not sooner). If you look at our roster for next year as of right now, it looks terrible. I think we'll have a great shot at it and I'm actually excited

The problem with doing a lottery live is the whole premise is based on clicking go on a calculation. The results give you the first overall pick. So it would make for 3 secs of good TV. Having the results done before hand and over seen by "impartial bean counters/lawyers" allows you to count down and in the process fills time and adds drama.

If the hockey gods are real and just... This is how it will go:
Flames finish around 25th in 2015;
Oilers finish last;
Iginla wins the cup with the bruins in June of 2015;
Flames win the lottery despite the poor odds and draft McDavid 1st overall;
Iginla re-signs with Calgary for 2 years to finish his career;
Iginla plays on the 2nd/3rd line with McDavid as his centerman;
Iginla Scores 40 goals for the last time in his career with help from McDavid;
Flames win the Stanley Cup in 2017;
Iginla retires on top with 2 Stanley cups, 650 goals, and he got to mentor the next generational talent before finishing his career;
Oilers still dead last in the NHL.
... It would be a dream come true but I won't hold my breathe.

We can only hope that the young prospects/rookies in Florida and Buffalo can help improve their teams slightly next season with added development.

Last year's Hawks roster had 11 of their players acquired through the draft.

For reference, the 2012-2013 Flames...
Trades 8 FA 11 Top 10 0 11 to 60 2 Later Rounds 1 Waivers 2
I set the criteria at 15 games played. I also counted Bouw / Wideman as FAs, not as trades.

He'll never be a Flame. Ever since 04 our luck has gone dry. I blame Iggy for touching the Campbell trophy.

You just do it backwards. Say the 17th place team gets 14 ping pong balls (14 teams in the lottery), 18th gets 13 balls, working down to the 30th place team gets 1 ball. The first ping pong ball picked gets the 14th pick. You could play with the odds by adding more balls.

This talk of tanking is silly. No matter how much you suck you are still a 3-1 dog to get the first overall pick. Our real goal should be to hoard 2015 first round picks but it's doubtful that they will be available except from maybe the elite teams who aren't likely to be lottery eligible.
