This.
With the cap going down, multi-year contracts are not being taken, except on significant discount. The Flames will have another round of sell offs if they equally suck next deadlline.
A rebuild takes patience. You can't just sell off every asset at the first opportunity. There are only so many buyers looking for so many pieces.

We should get more in return next year for some players when they are in the last year of their contracts (Sarich, Stajan, Stempniak, and Cammy). No real point in trading them now, when we should be in the same position next season.
I don't know why we kept Babchuk though, maybe there was zero interest for him whatsoever? Not sure if we should care that we didn't get a 7th back in return for him, but at least it would have been a trade for the sake of making a trade.

I wonder what kind of return we could've gotten for Iggy if his team list wasn't so restrictive

I'm guessing one/mix of the following:
1) nobody offered serious proposals for them (if they would have traded Glencross for a 3rd, would we be happy?)
2) Feaster wanted bubble players back along with picks in order to still ice a lineup the rest of the season, other teams weren't interested.
3) Feaster was asking too much for all of these guys.
In any case, I would bet more of them are traded at the draft / July 1. As has been mentioned there simply isn't a need for most of these guys going forward.

Lets face it. "Open for business" is the equivalent to the take for free box at a garage sale.
The fact that we got one of our polished turds taken off our hands is a win.

I assume the Flames will be busier at the draft. Much easier to move stuff around when the other teams know better how much money they'll have to work with.

Would have liked to see Cammi or Tangs traded. More to show that they are really going into the rebuild stage. I'm still not convinced that they will go into rebuild mode. I could see them picking up Weiss as a UFA and trying to spin at as " he is the best center this team has had in years and Cammi can take over Iggy's role" kind of thing.
I think JiriHrdina hit the nail on one of his posts, about what kind of value the flames had with players on trade deadline day.

guys with one year left on their contracts are far more likely to be moved at next years trade deadline
I imagine Sarich as a 2 month rental would have moved, but not with $2M owned for another year.

The Iginla, Bouwmeester trades made sense if we were going complete rebuild. Now that the deadline has passed, and 90% of our roster is the same, I'm feeling underwhelmed about the deadline...

I don't know why we would want to trade everyone. We do not want to make the same mistake as the Oiler's. Follow Montreal and Ottawa, quick turnaround. We moved out 3 players and opened up 3 roster spots for our young guys. We probably don't have anymore than 3 guys that can step into the NHL right now anyways. We have also stockpiled draft picks and hopefully one of those can suit up next year as well. Running a team with all rookies does not work. I like the approach Calgary is taking right now. Blowing it up is stupid and not fun for anyone.

We, in no way resemble either Ottawa or Montreal in their rebuilds. Ours will be much longer.

I am just glad that all the "I hope Feaster doesn't crap the bed at the trade deadline and do <insert moronic fantasy here>" posts will now be out the door.
Unfortunately, we now have to endure the "I bet Feaster trades the first for <insert moronic fantasy here> because he clearly <insert one of "wants to win now" | "hates rebuild" | "isn't the man for rebuild" | "is under pressure from owners"> posts until the draft, despite all the recent evidence philosophies have moved towards what many have been clamoring for.
<Insert one of "Rock solid plan" | "answers in the room" | Stupid fat joke> to really look clever will finish these cookie cutter posts off.
I think Feaster deserves credit for making some tough decisions, and squeezing what he could out of tough situations. The market was not a big seller's market like the media hyped. I actually believe rebuilding is something Feaster suggested when he was brought on board, and I think it took the owners this long to finally get on board with a full rebuild.
The gaffe's do tarnish him somewhat. I give him the benefit of the doubt on the ROR attempt - it is my opinion the picks would not have been lost. The Boston fiasco is a little embarrassing, but I also think he is learning to keep his mouth shut some more - it could be argued he has been muzzled - doesn't really matter. Someone, somewhere in the organization is learning.
Sure more guys could have been moved, but a team still needs to be iced, and you can't call up the entire AHL roster. There is plenty of time for more turnover between now and the draft, and hopefully we can sell off some more rental players next year. Too much to fast would be disastrous IMO.
I am now looking forward to the ball being in Weisbrod's court to see what he can do with the draft.

|
He's got another year on his deal at a good rate - so he could fit in nicely next year. Given teams apparent reluctance to add cap for next season he may in fact have more value next deadline.
He also seems to play well with young players and could be a good guy to keep around for what will probably be a rough year next season.
I actually see lots of good reasons for keeping him for next year.

As mentioned, someone has to play for the team next year so unless you are getting a good return you keep the Tanguay's and the Glencross's. Overall I think we did alright considering we only had one trade partner to work with in the Iginla deal and a very limited market for Jbo.

Hopefully Cammi and Sarich gone at next year's trade deadline for more picks.
I'd like to see 2 or 3 veteran UFA's signed to 1 year deals with the hope that one or two have good years (like Hannnan last year) and can be flipped at the deadline for a couple more picks.
Feaster/Flames get a B+

I think Feaster has done well. He has garnered two first round picks for pieces that were not going to be here and, quite frankly not helping us enough for what we were paying them.
With the trades it gives some more intrigue/ something to be entertained by when following this team. The fans of this team need some more entertainment, the on-ice product has look gassed and out of date for a while. Now at least there is something else to talk about.
