Love him or hate him hes been one of the best goalies in the league for the past 10 years.

Why? there is no way Iginla is making $7mil as a Flame next year. Cammy, if he keeps up this Jeckyl-Hyde thing will get bought out.

How is Vancouver going to get out of this? Burrows and Edler get their raises next year too.

Not sure why you insist on "your" - I'm neither a Canucks employee, player, or fan, but whatever blows your hair back.

That's because of the massive papercut he just gave himself.

While technically a first overall pick, the Canucks had the 1st and 3rd overall, but no guarantee that they could grab both Sedins so they traded the 1st along with other picks to Atlanta for the 2nd and a future conditional pick under the condition that Atlanta would not pick a Sedin.

Essentially it amounted to letting Atlanta, who was about to start their first season in the league, have their pick disguised as the first overall in order to hype up Stefan in hopes of grabbing the attention of their new fanbase. Regardless of how you look at it, Atlanta gave up a Sedin + some junk for Stefan + some junk but their should be an asterisk beside Stefan's name under the list of first overalls.

Now with the inability to pick a Sedin, the pick doesn't look too horrible. That draft was weak outside of the Sedins and a couple diamonds in the rough (Zetterberg) with Havlat being a late first round pick (and off the radar in the top 15) so really Atlanta made a bad trade and not really a bad pick...if that makes sense.

On the Wickenheiser pick though, the Canadiens took him over players like Denis Savard and his 1400 points, Larry Murphy and his 1200 points, and Paul Coffey and his 1500 points, all who were drafted in the top 6 that year.

I'll take a DiPeitro-Macdonald tandem over Kipper-Irving any day of the week!

Kipper's been the best once....

More than either Luongo or DiPietro can say.

True, however he hasn't been the top guy in the past 10 years, that belongs to Marty.

Lol... what kind of crap logic is that? So back in 2002, Columbus traded Bouwmeester + option to trade a 1st for Nash?

The Thrashers moved up in the draft to draft the player they wanted. There wasn't a clear #1 in the 1999, but Stefan was the consensus #1 if there was one followed very closely by Brendl. I don't remember any draft guides that actually had "a Sedin" going #1. The top 3 was definitely Stefan, Brendl, and Daniel Sedin, so the idea that nobody was leaving with both Sedins was also predicated on the fact that nobody was going to draft the Sedins #1 and #2 (except for perhaps the Canucks who held the #3 pick).

Except, they didn't really.

Tampa wanted to draft Daniel Sedin 1st overall but they weren't convinced that he would come over separately right away, according to Burke he was the one who convinced him of that but there was some murmurs. So he doesn't want to risk it and moves down. The Canucks now have the 1st overall and the 3rd overall, they wanted the Sedins. Thrashers had the 2nd overall, and it does sound like they were high on Stefan and all they had to do to get him was tell Burke that they wanted him. Burke would have drafted Sedin first, went back to their seat waited for Atlanta to draft Stefan, and went back for the remaining Sedin.

Instead Atlanta and Vancouver made a deal where the Canucks would still get both Sedins (and actually guarantee it) while Atlanta would get to draft Stefan first overall and the ability to hype him up as a first overall pick to their new fanbase. The trade wasn't as much as moving up to guarantee you get your player as it was the marketing ability that comes with having a first overall pick with a new franchise.

In the end, if you got a first overall but you're not allowed to draft certain players with it, I feel like that probably deserves an asterisk. It wont obviously, and Stefan will go down as a terrible first overall pick, but it's not exactly clear cut. Also it pales in comparison to the Wickenheiser blunder.

I think Dipietro is going to be waived and then signed by a team like the Blackhawks.

Next thing you know, he will be playing 65-70 games a season as a very good goalie. It's just like Marian Gaborik in Minnesota.

Well, making fun of DiPietro isn't all that funny anymore:

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
I had a candid interview with @nyislanders G Rick DiPietro today. He was waived then demoted to AHL team in Bridgeport,CT last week.

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
DiPietro told me Isles waiving him felt like, "they ripped my heart out, stabbed it, set it on fire and flushed it down the toilet."

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
I asked DiPietro if he thinks he's still part of the Islanders future plans. He said, "I don't know." @news12li

Kevin Maher@KMaherNews12
DiPietro also admitted injuries, losing and fan hatred over the past 3 years made him think about killing himself at one point.

If he restructured his contract to be more friendly for today's NHL teams, that would help in getting his career back on track. Something tells me he likes his contract too much, however.
