I just pray he doesn't end up landing a regular job with TSN or HNIC.
Don't ruin hockey for me when it's just come back.

Sounds like Burke did NOT want to make Luongo deal, while many in Leafs org did. Burke a principled man.

Makes sense. New owners for a new season. Bring someone in under a completely new CBA regime to clean up his mess.
Most likely they had a hockey related disagreement on a trade for Luongo and ownership recognized it as a sign of things to come.

Except that the Leafs got new owners last year.
I suspect this is Bell and Rogers doing. They probably want to outsource the position to India and Burke wasn't interested in moving.

Ugh if what I've heard is true then this is ugly. Sounds like it could be personal misconduct

New ownership group combined with what is likely a disagreement on trading for Luongo. Burke wants nothing to do with that contract while management thinks they can win with him in net.

Apparently, Burke's made 40 (!) trades since becoming the Leafs GM http://www.nhltradetracker.com/user/..._Maple_Leafs/1
1. Phaneuf et al for Stajan et al (w/ Flames)
2. Gardiner, Lupul et al for Beachemin (w/ Ducks)
3. Acquiring Primeau's contract and a 2nd for Stralman, Stuart and a 7th (Flames)

I wrote the above a couple of minutes ago but now i have a feeling it will have nothing to do with this. My bet is it will be about a non hockey issue. Not sure what or if we will ever find out the full truth.

Gradiner and Lupul was by far his best trade. Still doesn't make up for the Kessel debacle and him blowing his gigantic load in his first free agency season signing truculent idiots forever weighting the team down.

I agree. Perhaps the longevity of Luongo's contract was beyond what ownership was comfortable with and they canned him because Burke stared them down ("I'm going to acquire Luongo, or you're going to have to fire me.")?
Edit: Actually, maybe it was the other way around - "I don't want Luongo - the price is too high and the contract too long. If you want him, you're going to have to fire me." - With Nonis in the wings and his history with Luongo in Vancouver, maybe that's how it played out?
