The Mayan callendar and this whole Dec 21st thing is based on the winter solstice, so leap year or not, their callendar turns over on what we call Dec 21st.

I know absolutely nothing about guns other than to hold them sideways if you're feeling badass.
That's actually called a 'Kill Shot'.

If you're looking for more crossbow information, might I suggest reading a couple of idiots rant about TV shows and the implausibility of their fictional predicaments?
Aren't crossbows really slow in between shots? Just get a real bow. Then a baseball bat and machete. Of course this is my plan for zombies. If its raiders ala Fallout I'd want a gun.
Kukri seems like a good compromise between an axe and a machete, I've always thought an axe would be better for zombies, more weight at the end so you can get the job done with one swing.

But you can pick up a machete at crappy tire.... An axe wouldn't be super effective against multiple zombies at once. Where do you get a Kukri?
So, for the past couple of years, I have been leaving my hockey sticks right by the front door. My wife asked me tonight to move them and not leave them there anymore.
I shook my head no...said 'Zombies' and walked away.
She hasn't talked to me since.

Kukri are downright nasty weapons and definitely make huge slash marks. Not sure about the raw tissue damage, as zombies don't feel pain and the only real thing you can do with it is slice vital tissue (such as surface abdominal muscle), and maybe leg muscles if you're really close. No decapitation ability, just the ability to turn them into an immobile pile at close range. Unless you're really aiming for the lower body muscles or something to slice the head off, they're not entirely useful.
The biggest tissue you'd want to aim for are legs (immobilization as the muscle is severed), in which you want all the time you can afford to aim for. There isn't, in my knowledge of biology, an easy muscle to aim for that'd disable that in the torso region. The reward seems a little low for the risk.
[/nerd based rant on biology]
I would suggest something with a larger reach though for zombies. A spear or something of the nature is still going to be my melee weapon of choice. They jab a lot easier...and if you're in a group, a wall of pointed spears with a group of friends probably will serve any guarding purpose you need. Killing power is a little lower, but at least you don't you don't get bitten as easily. Kukri are nice and all, but they only have about arm's reach

Good point, some kind of polearm then.. A fauchard so you can hamstring them from the front maybe or a halberd, gives the spike on the end, a hook, and a larger blade.

I've already picked out the houses I'm going to loot.

lol, sure hope so. It's on cabelas website. It's the new "tactical" tomahawk. Not sure what about it makes it "tactical" but that's how they advertise it. Only $60 if memory serves.
