Another nice case is he's ppg - 40 and they overpay him on a long term contract, getting rid of some actual players of value in the process.

I non snarkily asked on HF how this contract fits into the team when what they need is D-men strong in their own end and a goalie.

The response I got was that Russell, Nurse and Bear (Who they now have to move out a contract to re-sign) are strong enough defensively that none of that matters

......huh?!?!?!

Oilers going for the most one dimensional team in the league award. Should continue to help them make the highlight reels though! Which, they can have.

This is a great deal for the Oilers. Not because Barrie could be this point producing powerhouse but because no matter what happens, the Oilers just got a free asset that they can turn into a good draft pick come deadline day.

As for Barrie, choosing Edmonton on a 1 year deal less than what I'm guessing he could or should get, tells me his IQ is right on par for an Oiler.

Wow. If true, that is a lot less money than I thought he was going to get. Maybe the player does match the eye test in this scenario.

Really thought his contract was going to be more than Brodie’s contract. That was one of the major reasons I was hoping the Flames steered clear of him.

No a huge fan of the player, but to be honest, it’s not a bad signing by the Oilers. No real risk on that contract with only one year.

Since E=NG, I am sure he will be the fans scape goat half way through the year!!!

They are counting on LTIR for Klefbomb

The GM’s disagree and their votes count more.

IF he is planning to pad his stats, has to have that PP producing at the same mythical percentage and chances as last season, if not lots of highlight reel, comedy, "this guy scored" happens.

Edmonton does realize they need 2 goalies on an NHL roster... right?

They'll figure it out. Call up Ryan McLeod from Bakersfield, tell him he's a goalie now, slap some pads on that guy, and problem solved!

Barrie is a flawed player but this is a really good deal for them. Makes the Tanev deal even more dumbfounding.

Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger
Barrie takes less to sign with the Oilers. 1 year, $3.75 mil. Had at least two other larger offers.

Don’t get it though the Oilers must think if all 5 players on the ice play offence they won’t need any D? It’s confusing.
If there out at deadline flip for 1st a 50% retained

Anyone who willingly takes less to play in Edmonton is not a smart person.

Interesting signing.

On one hand, a great value signing for the Oilers at $4M with no term. On the other hand, it solves none of their problems.

They already had the top PP in the league, and it was red hot last year. I think they will be hard pressed to have a better year this year, even WITH the the addition of Barrie.

And as for defense (what they actually needed), they have lost Klefbom, their best defender, and replaced him with Barrie, who - well - doesn't replace him.

So they weaken a position of weakness to strengthen a position of strength.

Bold strategy, Cotton.

He’s betting on himself. Figures a season of playing in the PP with the Deadmonton Globetrotters will pump up his stats and earn him a sweet deal in a year.

Not the type of defenceman they needed. That said I wish flames had gotten him around that price.

Capfriendly has them with 1.5 mil. Klefbom will be LTIR and there’s 15 forwards who won’t all be there opening night.
