Carolina gave Pittsburgh:
- Bunting
- 2 x 2nd round prospects
- Rights to a 4th round prospect
- Conditional 1st round pick which was downgraded to a 2nd round pick
- 5th round pick - Justin Poirier
That's a hell of a lot more than just a single 1st round pick.
Bunting alone went on to get 19 pts in 21 games as a Penguins player.
So if Kuzmenko is on pace for 40+ goals - he is getting atleast a 1st round pick.
Mangiapane was just traded for a 2nd round pick....

Guentzel was the most highly sought after player in free agency this year. They may both be scoring wingers but that doesn’t mean they have the same value.

Tarasenko got traded for a 1st round pick in 2023. He was on a 63 point pace at the time. Scoring wingers always get traded for good returns.

Guentzel wasn't on a 40-goal pace when he was traded. If Kuzmenko is on that pace, he's likely to be highly sought after himself.

Please trade Coleman for a haul and replace him with Jack Roslovic. The guy is solid all around, can play 3C well, and RH. At 27 years old, even a 4 yr deal for cheap would be a great signing to cushion the kids.
Coleman’s value will never be higher.

Toffoli was a 30 goal guy, cup winner, 2 way player and got a 2nd and 3rd for the Devils at the deadline

I'll stop beating this horse, but I am very confident that Kuzmenko, even at a 40G pace, will not return higher than a 2nd (and more likely a 3rd).

Justin Poirier belongs to the Hurricanes. Great value pick by them.
Nikita Artamonov, Roman Shokhrin, Fyodor Avramov, and Andrey Krutov were also good picks by them.

Can't really compare the Pittsburgh deal. They wanted a NHL player back as well.
They still got a pretty good haul, but they are also not looking for futures trades, they are all in with Crosby right now.

I think the point being that Kuzmenko can definitely land a 1st round pick.
He's 28.
He scored 39 goals in 81 games with Canucks in 2022-23.
He scored 14 goals in 29 games with Flames in 2023-24 (39.5 goal pace)
If he can once again score at that pace with the Flames in 2024-25 - this all but proves that the "slump" in Vancouver for half a year was an outlier data point.
If all these things come to pass, he is 100% getting ATLEAST a 1st round pick in return at the trade deadline + a prospect.

I'm not against trading Coleman, and I'd also be happy to be proven wrong on his trade value. But this idea of "strike when the iron is hot" on Coleman I think is a bit of a falacy. He's a super useful player, one that would be a great fit on any team, but I also don't think GMs around the league are going to be fooled as to what he actually is.
By that I mean, people aren't actually going to be fooled into him being both a 30 goal scorer and the great two way player he is for your 3rd line. And at 3 years left and almost $5M cap hit, I doubt you get a haul for that player. I doubt the valuation on him has shifted from strong 3rd line player you'd "like" to add for a playoff run, to "value contract top 6 forward". He's not going to get the haul we'd like to think with 3 years left.

While I understand that the team will be bad, and the next draft is very important for bringing in an elite player ( top 5 pick).
The Flames focus this year should 100% be prospect development.
Last year was stripping the team down to the studs.
I am not saying no more trades, but guys like Weegar, Andersson, Backlund, Coleman, Kadri are really important to teach young players how to play the games the right way.
I am worried that if you lose those players, you may dip into waters that are too deep to return from.

Depends what the team is looking for. A team that’s are looking to tighten up defensively and become more difficult to play against - like the Sabres, Senators, or Devils - would value Coleman highly. Especially if the Flames retained.

I think you'd be surprised. With the cap going up, 4.9M is pretty reasonable. Plus if we take on a bit of salary back, we could get a nice sized haul for him.
That being said he loves the city and his family has settled in well here, not saying I want to trade him. But there would definitely be suitors and a path for a decent deal. So many young teams trying to take that next step, he's a perfect guy to plug into your top 9 and show the younger players how to compete night in and night out.
