No, she's been a working musician for the last decade who has slowly built up a following. You might not like her music (I don't really care for it), but she is a legitimate artist enjoying legitimate success.

I studied classical piano and music history for many years and have grown to appreciate all musical genres for what they are. I've over 3,000 CD's and LP's in my collection, including classical, jazz, smooth jazz, funk, rock and alternative music. Anytime something new and fresh is on the horizon, I am all cheers, bring it on. But this?

Now you know how the rest of the world feels every time they hear the elevator music that is smooth jazz.

Sorry for the long rant, your post touched on something I think a lot when listening to some new performers being pushed on us by the networks under "this is THE new art" premise. Let's assume that someone listened to St.Vincent's audition and genuinely proclaimed "Yeah, she is good and she'll sell; let's help her out!" This means their evaluation process was similar to yours. What criteria do you apply when you call her "immensely talented"? I am not attacking your taste at all, just really interested in your perception and thought process, as it is quite different from mine, obviously.

There's a reason that the surviving members of Nirvana had her be one of four artists to play with them at their Rock 'n' Roll HOF induction and it wasn't because a TV network was trying to push her. She is obviously a respected musician and artist.

Like I said, I'm not a huge fan of her music, but I'm baffled that it garners such strong opinions either positive or negative.

I liked Brooks. His appearance on Update when he talked about his tattoo was hilarious. Too bad he didn't find a place. I hope that Noelle chick doesn't make it back. She was pretty useless.

Katy and Aidy are fantastic. Taryn (I don't know how to spell his name) is probably the best on the guys side.

I am staring at a picture of John Milhisner and Noel Wells and I can not think of one thing either of them did.

Brooks had those two hilarious weekend update segments, but other than that, not much.

Too bad about Nasim. She was pretty good.

Kyle Mooney is the one I was hoping would go. I went from loving digital short to dreading them when he started doing them.

Agreed about Mooney. Maybe all his SoCal culture characters are really funny if you're actually from there, like he is. But if you're not, its pretty weak sauce. The only Digital Short I actually liked of his was when he was constantly awkward and scared to ask out his apartment neighbour played by Vanessa Bayer, and that's only because Beck Bennett saved it with his ultra-forward advance.

When I heard the news a couple rookie performers were cut, I was hoping one was Sasheer Zamata. Too bad to hear about Pedrad. I never thought she was overly great (I'll be surprised if she hits stardom post-SNL), but she was nice to look at.

I'm surprised anyone would lament Brooks Whelan's departure. He was straight up terrible.

Oh sure, he had that anecdote he told that one time on Weekend Update. It was the only thing anyone can remember him doing all year. On top of that, his story wasn't even funny. Just about every single one of my friends can tell a funnier story in a funnier way at the drop of a dime.

And yes, I'm being irrational in my disdain for Whelan.

Wells and Milhiser were completely forgettable.
