No issues at all with how the Flames managed him. They gave him plenty of opportunity and Sven even saw some success on a few of those opportunities. The problem is he started to plateau while his peers around him passed him on the depth chart.
Not too worried about moving him and going by 'what have you done for me lately', a 2nd is a decent return.
But sheesh, Treliving couldn't find any other takers besides Vancouver? Really? Treliving's not an idiot, so I'm guessing he's of the opinion that the likelihood of Baertschi doing anything is close to zero. But, boy it still has some potential to really blow up in his face.

Martin St-Louis cleared waivers, contract was terminated and left via UFA.
Brett Hull was traded for a package that won the Flames the cup.
Sven Baertschi requested a trade.
3 completely different scenarios.

I would pay very good money to see what happens if the Canucks tell Sven he's got to play on the Penticton tourney.

I don't think believing that Baertschi will become a good NHLer is comparable to thinking Schremp would score 1300 points.

He's talking about 100 point predictions or comparisons to Brett Hull.

Why must everyone be so negative. What if Sven never pans out, Vancouver then losses a 2nd round pick and wastes time developing a prospect. People need to stop hating on Treliving and realize that Sven had been past by to many others in the depth chart. IMO a second was justifiable.

Lots of thoughts and emotions on this one...
Baertschi was a good choice with the 13th pick in 2011, IMO. And then in his post draft year he wasn't just good, he wasn't even great - he was arguably the best player in the entire CHL. There was plenty of reason to be excited about him.
And over the next couple years, he continued to show promise, but at the same time, there were cracks starting to appear. One of the things that has frustrated me the most about him is how easily he gets knocked of his skates. And there has been enough talk in this thread about attitude so I won't go there.
I still think he will be a good NHLer. But it is by no means a certainty. Which makes the trade fascinating. The Flames get a pick - definition of uncertainty - and the Canucks get a time limit. It will be fun to see how it plays out.
I don't think there's any doubt that he will be on their roster next year - they bought the asset and they will give him every chance to prove them right.
But unless Greene does some serious magic with him over the next couple months, Baertschi simply isn't ready to run with the opportunity. So then it will become a race - can he continue to develop fast enough to justify the continued ice-time, or will the bloom fall off the rose and Vancouver fans turn on him?
It will be interesting to watch. And despite my unbridled loathing of the Canucks organization, I think I will still be rooting for him.
From the Flames' side, I give Treliving credit for making an assessment and acting on it, as opposed to letting things fade into oblivion. And after hearing that the Baertschi camp demanded out and had no intention of signing, well a 2nd suddenly sounds pretty darn good.
Essentially, Treliving took a deteriorating situation and turned it into what is probably an equivalent risk, but at least it is one he has control of, and one where he has a lot more time to make it work.

I want to acknowledge that Sven was a real pro in this situation. Asked for a trade months ago and nothing was made public of it. Went in, played his game, which improved in that period of time meaning he actually tried instead of fussed or pouted.
I can respect that. He may be a Canuck from now on but if he makes it Calgary will have had a big part in developing that along with him being a total pro throughout his time here.
Good luck kid. Don't let Bouma catch you in the corners.
EDIT: Also don't forget we still have Tim Harrison kid. So don't get cocky.

All joking aside, I don't blame Sven.
He has the opportunity with his next contract to either make thousands or millions of dollars. One is predicated on the NHL and the other on being a minor leaguer. If the Flames aren't going to give him the chance, then he needs to go somewhere else. Careers are so short. A shot here or there could change the entire course of his career. Good for him.

I think that depends on the coach. The Canucks genuinely seem to roll 4 lines. That doesn't mean Sven will be trusted enough to be on the roster, but coaches play favourites.
The sad part for me is that I don't think the pick was bad. I think the team didn't develop Sven properly and he ended up getting lost in the shuffle.

Not sure why I bother trying to figure out what my thoughts are, I can almost always just read them in your posts. Very well said, save for maybe the part about rooting for him. I'll be rooting for the Canucks to give up on him, and for Sven to carve out a career in the East with no regrets on either side.
