When looking to make trades at the draft I do think a 2nd round pick will carry more value than Sven

Clearly we need to trade Gaudreau for a 3rd to even things out. 'Cos that would totally be good asset management.

I meant the draft class as a whole. Besides it's a strange way to look at things like that. How many 1st round picks is Stamkos worth? Forsberg? Connor Murphy?
We drafted a player who unfortunately did not meet expectations. On top of that Baerstchi was not willing to re-sign. Given that we were going to lose a 1st round pick for nothing. Instead, Treliving took a 2nd from a rival when no one else was willing to pay that much(in a positive way of looking at it). No issues when you look at the big picture.

Very good value for him. 2nd pick more tradeable then him, if it comes down to that.
The basics? It's fairly clear that Hartley doesn't like him one bit, look at the call up history, or lack thereof. With Hartley extended, that's that, bet the agent asked for a trade at that point.
Didn't help that the former GM anointed him at the end of the 2012 season to help him with the entitlement...but the same GM's tune had changed before the puck dropped the next year, clearly Hartley (who coached in Switzerland) got an instant impression of what he was dealing with, and the GM changed his tune as mentioned.
A year on, and Burke, an outsider to that point, had the same impression upon arrival.
That's pretty much that, and 2 years later, Sven hasn't done anything to change minds, and as mentioned, numerous prospects have clearly jumped him.
Given that situation, good work to get that value back. One of my friends made a point today; he's a prime target for heading to Europe at some point, and if he doesn't crack the Canucks lineup that's a very good chance in a year or so given his attitude.
Is he Dustin Boyd V2.0? Certainly trends that way, previous coaches were supposedly holding Boyd back according to many, then he gets the chance and really does nothing, and out of the league a few years, 32 goals in 220 games.
Sven was another young guy who made the most of an emergency call up 3 years ago. He was the younger guy that so many here really wanted to be the "next guy" era, with all the vets on that Flames team under Sutter...and with that stigma attached to him ever since. Now he's supposedly been punished and held back, when the reality is that he's just not that "next guy" he's just that guy who potted a couple goals in his first 4 games 3 years ago and hasn't done enough to crack a young NHL lineup the last two years.

Yes but our GM needs to be replaced by a guy named Feaster. Also I wonder what Weisbrod had to say/do with this deal on the Van side?

I don't see how the Flames mishandled him - if there was a team for a young player to earn a spot the past 3 years it was Sven in Calgary. He didn't lack for opportunity, he just didn't rise to the occasion. He just doesnt seem like the kind of guy who would be satisfied with proving himself in the AHL first. I blame the player for that.
Some guys are late bloomers, he may still be a great NHL player, but the Flames have run out of time with him. He demanded a trade and wouldn't re-sign in Calgary. If thats the best deal the Flames could get ...I guess other GM's agree that he is a risky prospect trending more towards bust than diamond in the ruff.
Granland, Wotherspoon and Gaudreau still makes that draft look good ...its weird to stumble on the lowest pick, but #13 looks like a late round steal.
its a bit of a lottery.
|
Yeah it's great that we at least got a 1st round talent out of that draft.
I kind of hope that Baertschi works out as a Canuck because it would be fun to hate him.

Remember this - the month of May will belong to the Flames as TSN and Sportsnet start waxing poetic about how strong of a draft the Flames will have, and how we can move up easily in the draft with our the number of picks we gathered in the first three rounds. We are going to be the sleeper pick coming out of the 2015 draft and have some serious prospect depth even if we don't move any picks.
And the Sven trade will be a distant memory in the media and among fans.
I think we'll get out of this just fine and a stronger team long-term. We are doing everything we should have done (collect draft picks with a 3-5 year vision) before we knew how good this team would perform this season.
We are staying the course, and bringing our young guys along just fine. Sven was a product of an old guard, and we could all see his progression was teetering on the word "bust" but wanted Sven to work out. Sometimes it's best just to walk away, and after digesting this trade, I think the future of our franchise is still in good hands and on track.

Shinkaruk hasn't been outplaying many people lately.
Sven has 25 points in his last 29 AHL games. After that pointless start, he's turned a bit of a corner.

He also had 4 points in that 10-0 burnout, so his recent performance is also a bit skewed.

Yeah Sven has been better lately, and his 200ft game is greatly improved as well.
It's too bad he put the Flames in this spot because IMO he had become a better player based on their development of him.
He will be an NHLer IMO.

Problem with Sven is he needs to be a top six and I don't think he is on too many teams
Flames don't need players that expect things to be handed to them anyway it goes against everything they are building

You'll find that many scorers in all leagues will have games where they put up a lot of points in a single game.
Sven really hasn't had many games like that.

The Canucks will call up Sven soon to show their fanbase their shiny new toy and try to rub the Flames noses in it.
Unless he plays with Sisters i don't see him making a huge impression.
Or are they going to thrust him ahead of the rest of their depth onto the 2nd line.
Either way it will be short lived.
