Phenomena (1985)
Opera (1987)
Two Evil Eyes (1990)

I bought a bunch on 4K too because his films are so striking visually and the sound design and music is usually a highlight too. Suspiria was the first to arrive and looks and sounds brand new, it's incredible.

Suspira on 4K is incredible one of my favorite transfers, it's a gorgeous disk! It's too bad they only released the remake in 4K in Germany, that film would also look incredible.

Yeah, it'll get a new release eventually. Odd for it not to have one already given it's from 2018.
My copy of the Clue 4K also just arrived, love that movie!

It's tough to make a prequel because of expectations, and it's even tougher to hit the sweet spot of having an original film that also connects to the classic that everyone knows.
Wonka manages to hit that sweet spot. The story is original, inventive, and smart, and only pays a little bit of fan service to the classic story that follows. Chalamet is charming and magical in the role, and he really makes you believe that magic is possible in the most disarming way. The plot in this film makes you understand how he ends up the way he is later on, but you also see his genius and genuine joy for life. The new songs are adequate enough, as is the dancing, but the production design throughout the film is beautiful and perfect. It feels like a real version of "London", and yet seems slightly off-kilter and fantastical. It adds a lot to the feel and vibe of the film, and is genuinely gorgeous. There is real and well timed comedy throughout, capturing just the right mix of silly and authenticity of the characters. It's never forced and will bring genuine smiles and joy to the viewer.
My only complaint is that the film drags a little in the 3rd act as the plot to wrap up the consequences for the baddies is a little long, but it's a small grievance. Still, this film manages to walk the tightrope and avoid the pitfalls of so many other prequels/follow up films. It could easily be a stand alone film without ever knowing about the original Willy Wonka film.
It's just a genuinely joyous and magical film. I strongly recommend it. 9/10.

What about Wallace, huh? Where's Wallace?!?
What about Michael B. Jordan as Bond? He's crashing up Ferarris as practice for the role it appears too!

If you're into Italian giallo, I'd suggest the new Arrow 4K release of Blood and Black Lace. Comes in a beautiful box set and was the inspiration for Argento.

I love Blood and Black Lace, but earlier this year I finally tracked down a Blu-ray copy, so don't know if I can justify a box set.

He’s not a great actor. He was meh in The Wire.

Cat o Nine Tails is the one in the Argento Arrow series I didn't bite on. I'm going to watch it soon and probably will add it to my next order, haha.
I know it was announced Opera is getting a new release eventually, hopefully Inferno follows suit as those 2 are among my favourites.

Agreed. Without Remorse was one of the worst acted movies I'd ever seen. Doesn't help that it was poorly written too, but just a crap effort all around. Really ruined all hope of the Rainbow Six movie actually being half decent
Michael B Jordan easily the worst John Clark ever. We want Liev Schreiber back!

I was kicking myself that I missed Inferno when it was on Criteron.

Die Another Day, had it's moments but overall a step down from the first 3 Brosnan Bond films. The CGI in this hasn't aged very well at all, and the weird random slow motion shots are so weird. The film actually starts off strong IMO (great song by Madonna, and great opening with Bonds torture to set the tone) but once it goes to Iceland, it goes downhill fast.

I guess I'll post this here? Warner Bros and Paramount in talks to merge.
Quote:
Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount Global have held talks about a potential merger of the two media companies, Variety has confirmed.
Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav met with Paramount Global CEO Bob Bakish in a lunch meeting Tuesday in New York where they discussed a possible merger, sources said. Zaslav also has talked with Shari Redstone, whose National Amusements Inc. owns a controlling stake in Paramount Global, about a potential combination of the companies.
|
I thought big tech would've scooped up Paramount by now.
Side note: I kinda feel like we need a thread to discuss the movie industry that isn't this thread or the box office thread (physical releases, studio news, etc)

Just finished Saltburn which was released on Prime video today. It was super twisted and shocking at some parts. Barry Keoghan was excellent and should be up for an Oscar for his performance.
Would recommend a watch for sure.

A couple of airplane movies:
Leave The World Behind: Pretty good. Loved the concept, the acting and some interesting scenes. Unfortunately the movie goes about a centimetre deep which is too bad, could have been a lot better.
May December - this movie has received some great reviews and it didn't really do it for me. I just didn't find myself laughing at the campiness of it all. The guy that played the husband was good.

If it means that Paramount and WB merge their streaming services into a single service, I'm all for it.

I thought about taking in a matinee of Poor Things but it’s only playing at Chinook. I’m not going anywhere near there.

Yeah, I was coming from Chestermere and didn’t want to go that far. Anyway my post was super “Cool story, bro” and I’ll check it out after the holiday.

I really liked Leave the World Behind too....a lot better than I expected. and I agree it could have been a lot better...some wasted potential there. I loved the tension build up throughout. Gave it a 2nd watch when my wife wanted to see it too, and it definitely has great re-watch value...lots of unique memorable scenes. 7.5/10
