Idris Elba should have been Bond and should still play James Bond.

Timothy Dalton nailed the more serious Bond, Craig was just unlikeable and when they tried to make him more quippy in his later installments he just came across as a ###### instead of funny / charming.

100% this.

Craig did a brooding Bond well, but lacked real charm or humour that others have.

Timothy Dalton is an underrate Bond - ahead of his time, really.

The Living Daylights is actually really good (a bit long in the end with the two villains).

license to kill is a supremely underrated movie that loses surface points for being so 80's and catching the miami vice / scarface crowd (also Wayne Newton!). But it's probably the only movie where Bond actually engages in espionage/sabotage

I suspect the next revival of bond to be closer to the MCU in tone. Probably won't be as serious in order to appeal to a wider breadth of audience.

Brosnan's films being somewhere between the old campy one and the brooding drama ones that followed was just the right kind of tone. The last one was just horribly written and over the top with tech so it left fans with a sour taste.

If it's possible to do a more stripped down version that isn't about facing world domination every movie (perhaps take a page from the recent Man from U.N.C.L.E film) while putting a funnier and charismatic lead in the role IMO that would be the right direction.

The worst dumb thing in the Craig movies was Bond and Blofeld being secret brothers, and part of why Blofeld hates him being because his dad favored the adopted Bond. Which is literally a plot point from Austin Powers.

I'd have killed to see an Idris Elba Bond.

That would have been awesome!

Why does everyone have such a boner over Idris Elba? I'm not that familiar with his work, but I did suffer through all of Hijack earlier this year and thought it was terrible. Dude seems super one dimensional, but it could have been the trash writing in the show, IDK.

Count me as one that doesn't see Idris as a fit outside of the charisma/acting chops.

I think part of it is he would be too physically built/strong. You'd have to find bigger henchmen/rival agents to convince me that he wouldn't easily win hand to hand against whoever he was fighting.

You'd have to have a Jaws in every film or hire wrestlers, and suddenly your movies are looking closer to the new fast and furious entries.

Elba would have been a great choice around the same time as Craig. Unfortunately he's probably aged out of it a bit by now if they want an actor that will play him for 5-6 movies.

Stringer Bell character gets him Mt Rushmore status for life.

I like it that each bond has a different vibe. Having the exact same characterization over 27 movies would be boring. Sometimes it’s too serious and sometimes it’s too campy but that’s just how perpetual characters work. Happens with comic and novel adaptations all the time.

Yeah I feel he could balance the campy wink-wink stuff with the seriousness of the situation a Bond agent typically finds himself in.

He was good in Rocknrolla in that sort of role.

Elba is about the most suave mother ####er ever. And he can do action it's criminal he is not James Bond. And no it's not a race thing he's simply perfect for the role.

My understanding was that he was considered for the role, but he's just too old.

Its a very, very physically demanding role. Its why Brosnan quit, its why Craig quit and I think everyone, including Elba, decided that he was just too old to start up now.

Its a damned shame too because I think he'd have been great at it and brought new life to it.
