The Oilers were a semi competitive team in the late 90s though and reached the finals in 2006. Their rebuild really started after the 2007 season where there was the attempted scoring by committee by Sykora, Hemsky, Smyth, Horcoff, Stoll, and Lupul. That along with a hope that Pisani would grow after his play in the 2006 playoffs (spoiler: he didn't). They have been in the top 10 in the league ONCE. (2016-17)
They have been in the top 40% of the league ONCE (16-17)
They have been better than median team only five times (2 of those 5 times they were 15th out of 30, another time they were 14th out of 30)

Rob Tychowski had the tweet last week about this being the fourth best season statistically out of the last 13. All they have to be to be their 3rd best season relative to the entire league SINCE 1990 is to be 13th overall.

EDIT: actually correct that, there’s 31 teams now. All they have to be to have their 3rd best season since 1990 is to be 14th overall.

Lundqvist wasn't the only one with sneaky style. Edmonton Oilers forward Connor McDavid's suit was made from a lightweight material similar to sweats.

"It's made by Eleventy from Henry Singer back home in Edmonton," said McDavid, who also had on tan and blue polka dot socks. "It's a little different. I'm not usually the guy who wears different stuff. It's really comfortable. These pants are super stretchy, it's almost like sweatpants. It's cheating."

It is always the case as each preseason the local press expect massive gains and one one or two of the more national guys get tricked into the sale of hope, too. And many of their fans eat it all up and ask for more, just as they have the last 20 years with Lowe at the helm.

I think they tank again this season, they have few options to get some skill into the lineup.

The team was already playing like it didn't care about the playoffs over the last couple of weeks. Even in their two game winning streak against two pad teams they were pretty dominated. the win against Carolina was the height of a blow out win that really wasn't deserved.


When you look at the interviews after the last game with McDavid and Chiasson, it just sounded like they couldn't wait to get away from that locker room.


This team is done, Even though they're only 3 points out, they've got 4 teams between them and the wildcard spot, and all of those teams are just plainly better built then the Oilers so its hard not to imagine that they'll gear up for the playoffs.


On top of it, the players aren't stupid, they know more about what's going on with the coaches and GM situation then any of us do. First of all they're playing like they've quit on Mr "I'll make them play better, but it will be uncomfortable" Hitchcock. Which isn't hard to imagine given the lack of leadership in that room and the fact that this dressing room kills coaches careers. Also they're looking around the lack of talent in that room and no full time GM so they're believing that there will be no direction from the front office.


I expect the Oilers to win very few games between now and the rest of the year. I expect that we will at some point see or hear rumors about a full fledged split in a room that doesn't seem to be willing to show any "Loilalty" to each other (Frack that's lame).


The NHL has to do everything to ensure that the Oilers don't receive a top pick. I know that whiffs of corruption or cheating, but that organization doesn't deserve a top pick in the draft. The NHL has to find a way to make a statement telling these idiots to get it together or else.

Yea, I just can't see that roster making the playoffs this year, even though they're only a few points out at the moment. Their forward depth is awful, their D is even worse, and their locker room is completely dysfunctional. That team needs a major overhaul before they can even sniff the playoffs.

I think it'll end up being a battle between Dallas, Colorado, Anaheim, and maybe the Canucks for the two wildcard spots. Hell, I'd say the Coyotes and Blues have a better shot at the playoffs than Edmonton does, as those teams have been playing pretty well lately.

It is a trend that is coming out in suits. It is most likely a french terry fleece (the one I've seen from Jack Victor was) fabric, much like the denim brands started a few years ago. You will see it hit more mainstream brands probably this fall, but the high end fashion brands are doing it already.

I think your spot on. These players have nothing to play for and they are too versed in the ways of losing. There is little, or no will to win especially when losing has been endorsed by the organization for so long. I think you are right about the split in the room they tried to anoint McDavid as the leader but loyalty isn't given it is earned. Same goes for the organization following the "nothing earned, everything given" mantra. Spoiling, paying players to keep them on board while they themselves get paid to do nothing but tank.
