I don’t think we should let Smith off so easy... It’s preseason for the other guy on the other side of the rink too and he looked in fine form.
And Brouwer has no chemistry with Bennett whatsoever!! When are the coaches going to admit that! In fact I would go on to say that Brouwer doesn’t seem to have chemistry with anyone on the team.
I personally am tired of the retreads this team brings in... Smith, Brouwer, Glass, Freddie Hamilton etc etc....
Give Foo and Poirier a couple of months in the AHL then bring them back and work them in somewhere... Give Gillies a shot or Rittich and hopefully they give Lazar and Jankowski a lot of ice time to get their games going because the team wastes too much time with what obviously isn’t ever going to work with the guys on the bottom they are using now

Yeah, but in true Vancouver form there's an actual goalie controversy there. Markstrom is the presumptive starter but it wouldn't take much to supplant him. Smith would have to be pretty consistently bad for Lack to take his job this year. Not that it can't happen, but it's much less likely. Smith can afford to use the preseason as a warm-up, whereas Nilsson's in a job interview every time he takes the ice.

I didn't think they played all that bad. We learned that 4th line is no good, we learned Brouwer looks to be on a different wave length then Versteeg and Bennett. (Insert Janko somewhere on 3rd/4th) Smith didn't look terrible at all. Besides that 1st one, but even then the team should of not let that chance happen ( sure stops would always be nice) but the rest were not fully his fault either. It's going to take sometime for the team to respond to his quick puck dishouts, once they 100% expect him to play it I think the zone exits will be much better. They looked uncoordinated, with the constant forcheck, big difference from Elliott covering the puck every second he could. 3m line hasn't looked to bad really, Backlund looks to be shaking off a bit of rust, he'll be back in no time. Bart looks like forsure he'll be #6 D, he stood out. Brodie and Hamonic look really good at times then ya fall apart at times, they just need to continue to build chemistry and they will be awesome. PP however didn't look very pretty tonight. Bright side that's 7 goals for Monahan in his last 7 games. Cant help but wonder of Janko could take the 3C and Bennett could go to top RW. Would solve our RW issue in a hurry.

I've learned not to put much stock into pre-season.
The season is long enough to worry about what happens now. These games mean nothing. Do you want your players going all out for what again?
I do understand as Flames fans how the playoffs went, how the end of the season went and how the Flames started last year we would like to see some wins, but again these games mean zero.
Use these games to get your hockey legs again, get up to speed, get that timing back.
That said, hopefully we see something a little more in our last match vs the Jets as that opening game vs the Oilers is coming fast.

I get it, I’d just feel better if I saw evidence of improved legs, speed and timing. Hopefully the last game shows more.

I personally don't think there's a need to freakout right now. There was a graphic yesterday that showed we outshot them 175-100 throughout the season series and I distinctly remember us out shooting the Canucks 2 to 1 or even 3 to 1 in some games and being absolutely robbed from Ryan Miller. So it shows we have the capability to play better.
If I'm concerned about anything right now, it's about the performances of Brouwer, Lazar, Hamonic and Smith's five hole.

The Flames are smart. They are getting all their losing out early. Those other teams are stupid for trying to win. Kidding.

How is Bennett supposed to get up for the game when he knows that he has Brouwer on his line..

I didn't think Mike Smith looked that bad, looked more like he was figuring out the pulse of the team and the coaching style while trying to match his type of game (good puckhandling, fast dish outs).
Looking forward to the next outing, I think he'll definitely improve.

Seemed like the powerplay was back to the old Hartley drop-pass system. then shovel off to the wing. Canucks were all over that though.. even I could see it developing. The high pressure from the Canucks paid off but man did our powerplay look dumb at times

This is when the coaches earn their pay. Start throwing the motivational cliches. I think Versteeg was the best Flame last night. Never mind bag skate. They need to run basic passing drills.

He should send a message and bring a bunch of eggs on the ice for passing practice.
"You guys play like a bunch of kids so here's a drill from the Mighty Ducks for you to learn the basics, like how to pass"

Really think Jagr would be good for this team right now. Teaching some offensive flair to young guys and being a leader on the ice would check off a lot of check boxes here.

I actually didn't think Smith looked as bad as some people are suggesting. I'd like him to stop that first goal. The second goal was a lucky bounce and the puck changed direction and speed and I don't think anybody tracked it. 3rd goal was a breakaway. He's gonna stop at least half of those.
My concern comes from his puck handling. He makes some nice reads and passes, but I just don't know if the few nice plays he makes out weigh the brutal give aways and him getting himself out of position. It will be a roller coaster ride watching it play out this season and I'm sure we'll all be screaming at our tv's as well as praising his plays at times
