Scouring Twitter this morning and discovering Philly is buying out Lindblom and then trying to move JVR with a 24 1st attached. Perhaps keep an eye on Philly today. They clear the cap and it's a no Brainer where #13 is going.

It's been spoken about by a few sources. Johnny also mentioned it in an interview.

The last thing that falls under this category is my belief the Flames and Gaudreau were close to agreeing on something before this season began. It’s something I’ve gone back to many times when falling on the optimistic side of this conversation over the last nine months.

My thoughts were whoever started to offload salary first was getting Johnny. If we see Lucic go it is a good sign, but if we see the Flyers dump salary it is a really bad situation for the Flames

Flames have a lot of fish to fry in one pan though, they should be clearing space regardless of Johnnys outcome.

The two risks have always been here:
1) pay with a year left on contract
2) pay with a day left on contract.
Teams gamble on 1) so that they don’t get to 2). The first risk is the Nurse situation in greaserville where that contract looks off market (and it did at the time too). For JG, Flames probably could have signed him last summer by overpayment at that time which would have been less than now. The second risk is a therefore a career season with the possibility of losing the player.
I don’t think that the flames asset manage very well.

Lucic will go after his signing bonus is paid. The Flames have boatloads of cap space right now to sign Gaudreau. Assuming Bingo is right - the move is already done and likely just pending the Flames paying the signing bonus so Arizona or Anaheim or whoever get Lucic and can pay him next to nothing.

If Johnny came out to the team this morning and said his heart is set on Philly and that is where he wants to go I am going to go back to my old sign and trade idea. Because Philly is in cap jail can the Flames work a deal to get Johnny at 8x9.5 to Philly + something to get Konecny back? If they can offload Lucic can they take back Konecny and JVR and send a late pick and a prospect?
Getting desperate here but spitballing some ways to save face.

They don't really though. If Gaudreau leaves, Tkachuk is much less likely to come back and will need to be dealt sooner rather than later if they want to maximize their return. At that point it's rebuild time - whether they want to or not.

Lindblom buyout would see the Flyers with just enough space to sign Gaudreau and be within 10% of the cap ceiling. It's honestly a move they need to make in order to be a player whatsoever tomorrow, but it doesn't give me good feels.

why take JVR off their hands though? Flames shouldn't help them. If they're desperate and want that eighth year via sign and trade, I'd happily take Konecny at a discount, but getting JVR off the books is their problem.

I’d also guess the Flyers could be after Malkin. If healthy he’ll still produce and it gives them a big body they always like. No doubt they’d be going for Gaudreau but teams always have backups and I’d guess Malkin is a possible target for less term and less cost.

He is not the type on contracts to take risks and try to hit a home run (sometimes on trading draft picks like the Hamilton, Hamonic and all the deals this year). I think he will get a deal done around 11 million which will be good value for money on the cap.

If I was Johnny, the team I would be most interested in outside Calgary is New Jersey, and I think the Devils are Calgary's biggest competition.
They have cap space, over $25M with 9 F, 5 D and 1 G. The big re-signings to do are Bratt, Zacha and Vanecek.
They have a bright future. Young forwards: J. Hughes, Hischier, Mercer, Holtz, Foote, Bratt. Young defencemen: Ty Smith, L. Hughes, S. Nemec, Mukhamadullin.
They also have solid vets on the blueline in Hamilton, Graves and Severson.
The biggest key will be if Blackwood and Vanecek hold up.

I wouldn’t call taking Philly’s dead weight so they can sign our franchise player saving face. At that point it’s just better to let him walk and take the cap space.

I'd take jvr with an unprotected 23 1st. If they take Johnny away, make them bet on themselves. That team is going to be terrible John or no John.

This. I think the moves we see from Philly today will tell us all we need to know.

That actually happened to the Flames before. Their first season in Calgary, they reached the third round and looked pretty impressive doing it… and then the wheels fell off, because several key players never wanted to leave Atlanta and had no desire to stay in Canada a moment longer than necessary. Cliff Fletcher didn't get fired. He did a hard pivot, traded everyone who wanted out, and after two poor years the rebuilt team took the 1984 Oilers to game 7.
Kid, this ain't our first rodeo. It ain't even our first doomsday.
|
Cool story but a different era, that was forty years ago. Free agents didn’t leave for nothing and Cliff Fletcher could make more deals in a month than a GM could make in three seasons today.
That was no rebuild, that was video game GM mode.
