I've watched every episode and I'm wondering if one needs to have played the games to understand the story better?
Everything is well done, but it seems like characters are introduced in a way where the viewer is expected to know who they are.
Kinda kills the show for me.
No, there was an element of that in the game too. They intro a character (usually during action segments) then shortly thereafter explain who they are.
The Karen gang leader is a non-game character, so we are just as in the dark as you.
The two guys pointing guns at Ellie & Joel at the end of E4 will quickly be explained.

I dont think you need to. I think some of that could be in your head.
For example, the "leader" in KC is not a character in the game. They seem to be doing backstory next episode to flush out the characters the same way they did with Frank and Bill.
It's been years since i played the game and only have a vague memory of where it's going

Yeah, really the only part I can vividly remember is the beginning. I'm being reminded of things as the show goes on. I didn't even remember Bill being gay or it being implied in the game.
Even the characters at the end of the last episode I didn't recognize until I saw the comparison videos.

It was more just a writing flaw. I've played the game, and was totally confused in parts of episode 3. I kept thinking I'd missed a bunch of major storylines. They had this new group. Lynskey's character kept going on about Henry.
I thought for sure I'd missed something. I really hate it when serialized shows introduce characters like this. Talking about things they've done that haven't actually been shown in the show yet. Henry is a bigger deal now, but I was confused for most of that episode and spent most of it worrying that I'd missed something very major, instead of paying attention to the episode itself.
I think the problem is that the entire story of the first game is being told in only 9 episodes.
The structure of the game is kind of like "the littlest hobo" in which the main characters go from town to town on their way west and meet new characters or events in each place they go to. In many cases in the game, you'd spend hours in a location and be basically fighting nameless enemies and move on.
With the show, they are trying to flesh out those enemies whereas in the game, they were just nameless raiders a la Mad Max. Hence we are getting a lot of characters just thrown in with minimal exposition and we only have one episode to absorb them. There's just not enough time.
Ah I knew that wasn't Shannon Terrace as someone mentioned last week. Pretty sure it's the bridge near Bow Valley Ranche.

Do people really need to have everything spelled out to them? It seemed pretty clear what's happening. They're in Kansas City, where there used to be a FEDRA quarantine zone but there isn't anymore. The reason that there isn't anymore is that people rose up against their particular tyrannical military dictatorship, and ousted them from power. Now they are going around executing anyone they see as having collaborated. Apparently Henry gave FEDRA some information about Kathleen's brother that led to him being killed, leading her to blame Henry. None of this was in the game but it's all very obvious.

Just a quick reminder, due to the scheduling of a conflict to resolve irreconcilable differences between a group of Indigenous Elders and what appears to be some Eagles...a shame really, as those are two groups that have historically gotten along famously., anyways...
Due to their scheduled violent conflict resolution session on Sunday, the end of the world will be live-streamed into your homes this evening.

If you thought this season would have a happy ending, you haven't been paying attention.

The HBO channel on Shaw shows a repeat tonight with the show on Sunday as does the tv schedule online. Just outdated listings?
