I actually think the fries there are the best in the city.

I was a fan of 5 Guys but not anymore.
Had Smash Burger the other weekend and it was good. Sad that they don't have the same menu across the franchise.

Enjoyed 5 Guys again today, as always. Haven't gotten to Smashburger yet. Or South Street, oddly enough, as I'm in McKenzie Towne and there's one on 130th. Parenthood gets in the way of some serious eating.

Was sent up to Deadmonton last week so I had to make due with a couple of burger taste tests. Went to The Next Act, burger was fine, but the bun could not handle the over easy egg. The burger fell apart near the end. Fries were 'garlic parm' but didn't wow me. 6.5/10
Also went to The Burger Joint, burger tasted great. The fries were in that fancy mini deep fryer basket, so you dont get many fries. 8/10

We live very close to South Street on 130th also and have their burgers every now and again. They are fantastic.
I find South Street to be far superior to 5 guys, mainly due to the beef. So much juicier and tastier. Plus, they're licensed so you can sip a couple brews with your excellent burger.

Plus, isn't South Street associated with New York Fries? That would make the fries far superior to Five Guys'.

Indeed they are... Their poutine is very good as well. The pulled pork poutine is excellent.

I went to that South Street when it first opened and thought it was horrible. Had a couple fellow chefs from Vancouver in town last year and they wouldn't stop talking about how horrible it was after trying it.
The poutine was the best part of my meal, and the fries were undercooked.
Only been there once, surely I'll give them a second chance but with five guys just a block away I'll have a hard time justifying it.

I would think that at times it would be annoying to be a chef and eat out.

So this weekend I found that there is a new Fatburger across from Kinjos on Macleod Tr. - the thing is, they have a Buffalo wing joint in there too. The hot wings are really good, and they have curly fries which are much better than Fatburger's normal fries (I usually get onion rings, since FB's fries are sucky).
Trouble is - it's normal Fatburger outrageous prices - it was like 40 bucks for two of us, and no booze.

I haven't eaten at a fatburger in probably a decade. Are the burgers still any good? Went in to one maybe 2 years ago, saw the prices and left.

At times. For the first few years I'd find it impossible to not pick apart and critique whatever it is I was eating, find all the faults with the food, service, try and think wtf was going through some chefs head when they decided x ingredient would go well with y. Not intentionally just second nature.
Now I'm better at leaving that at work and just trying to enjoy my meal. That and I drink more when I'm out now.

It's nice in the NW where we have a 5 Guys and Smashburger only a few minutes apart. They are both great and different enough that I feel I'm getting a great burger and a little variety.

No love for Naina's Kitchen? I've got to agree with the Burgerquest guys. Best burger in Calgary.

Naina's is great, but for me it can't rank with the best because it's a niche experience. A stuffed burger is almost an entirely different category.

I recommend giving Burger 320 a try. My favorite burgers are always the ones that are a higher-end version of the home-made backyard burger, and this is just like that. The meat in particular is really great.

Where's the 5 guys? I've been to the Smashburger up there but didn't realize there was a 5 guys nearby.

I've made the same mistake. It's the one day that it's closed.
