Jokes on them. We definitely are all gonna die. Like soon.

I tend not to like “told you so” posts. I recall people getting slapped down for ‘hyperbole’ that now would pale into insignificance compared to what has happened - over a period of six weeks.
I genuinely now think there is a real chance of an American invasion of Canada if the economic warfare is unsuccessful.

At this point my hope is that Trump f***s things up so badly within his own country that his administration will be way too busy trying to put out fires domestically, and that they'll end up forgetting about Canada. And then eventually we can just quietly go about our business and leave the U.S. behind.

Yup, that's the hope.
I hope it's such a mess domestically with people at their throats (but stays a hair short of civil war), keeping fat Sauron's eye firmly fixed on them.

I don't have that level of optimism. Trump will play the whole "they're treating us unfairly" cry baby routine. He already has a lot of people convinced that a trade deficit with Canada is "unfair" simply because they consume way more than us, and adding tariffs makes it fair. It won't be a big jump to then suggest that our tariffs on them makes us the aggressor. Just like how Russia invaded Ukraine and Ukraine not capitulating makes them in the wrong within his warped world view of the powerful eating the less powerful. Trump will make it look like Canada is the baddy and MAGA will buy it because it is a cult. For the past decade, people always think this is the time we finally have Trump exposed and that the gig is up, but it never works out that way.
Tariffs are only a starting point and if the economic war escalates, there are other things on the table Trump could use. I would not be surprised to see Trump use economic sanctions and blockades on Canada at some point.

This statement from the WH is such a load of crap. These arseholes can get f***ed.

“While President Trump gave both Canada and Mexico ample opportunity to curb the dangerous cartel activity and influx of lethal drugs flowing into our country, they have failed to adequately address the situation,” according to a statement released by the White House shortly before the tariffs took effect.

According to U.S. customs data, only 0.2% of the more than 20,000 pounds of fentanyl seized at the U.S. border in the 2024 fiscal year came from Canada.
Trudeau said Canada had nonetheless stepped up its drug enforcement efforts, resulting in fentanyl seizures from Canada dropping a further 97% from December to January, to 0.03 pounds.

And that's probably why we should just ride out the 25% tariffs while strengthening trade with other partners (with the hope that internal pressure twists his arm over time) and not give them anything to use to frame us as aggressors.
I suspect the significantly reduced spending on American goods and pulling our $2B worth of tourism to the states may be reason enough for him, but we can at least try.
Although I fully expect the next elected government here will respond in kind and blow this thing wide open.
I admire our leaders standing up to them in front of the cameras and on X, I really do, but this guy is already showing with Ukraine that he's bat#### insane with how he'll deal with foreign leaders, so in terms of an actual response I think we need to just fawn our way as far as it'll get us.

We definitely have to walk a fine line here. I do like that Canada's response so far is a measured one with $30 billion tariffs to start and then ramping up to the full $155 billion in 21 days if the U.S. doesn't pull back. This gives us at least a few weeks to possibly try and negotiate something with them. Sadly they probably won't back down because this entire administration are a bunch of petulant twats who have no sense of diplomacy and are completely full of s***. But we might as well give it a shot I guess.
In the meantime, we need to start making more new trade deals and strengthening/enhancing existing ones immediately. The only way we're gonna be able to ride this out is by working together with other countries and allies.

The Trump administration doesn't care about the US in any way.
The only reason why tariffs might work is because it hurts US billionaires and corporations, who have some influence in the system.
Trump however is mostly about destroying current US alliances as thoroughly as possible and aligning with Russia, so yeah.
Not much reason for optimism. Next up, removing sanctions from Russia.

Unfortunately still up about 20% from pre-election levels. Even if he clears all the regulatory barriers for his company, they eventually have to come to terms with the fact that Tesla pissing off liberals is equivalent to Bud Light pissing off red necks. Counting on MAGAs to buy Teslas when 80% of them think EVs are either pure evil or for pussies is not a very good plan.

Every dick-tator wants to quash protests.
So here he goes
A tweet from Trump that reads “All Federal Funding will STOP for any College, School, or University that allows illegal protests. Agitators will be imprisoned/or permanently sent back to the country from which they came. American students will be permanently expelled or, depending on on the crime, arrested. NO MASKS! Thank you for your attention to this matter”

Yeah. Booing is too nice. A nice FU Trump chant is totally appropriate. Even with little kids in the crowd.
