The last 2 times I was in Edmonton were for concerts, I was on the road and heading south to the city limits when the last encore songs were being played. I can't get out of that dump any quicker.

Lonely Planet was my go to travel guide in the late 90s and early 00s. If they sent me to a place like Edmonton -- as THE place to visit in a particular country -- I would have burnt all of my Lonely Planet guide books and never opened another again.
I guess their business model has had to change, but it feels like they'll suffer for taking on sponsorships like this.

The problem with travel guides is that the authors usually get some kind of perks for talking up certain places. Local tourist boards and local businesses often ply them with discounts and above normal service when they come to town, often directly invited for that purpose. They get treated like royalty and if you are willing to kiss the ring, you will get promoted and marketed.

Congrats on two shiny needles sticking out of a mound of #### that is the Edmonton skyline.
Here's the travel recommendation you paid for.
May god have mercy on the souls of those who venture there.

When you think of great American cities for travel, what do you think of.....
This list thinks of Pittsburg. The only US city to make the grade. Tells you something about the group.

To be fair, Edmonton isn't as awful in the summer time. But not going to be fun for anybody who ventures up there for September to March based off that recommendation.
When I graduated university I went backpacking for 6 months through Europe and Asia. I put away the lonely planet guide early on once it recommended a stop in Dresden, Germany. Truly the Edmonton of Europe, with a limited amount of nice buildings similar in looks to the legislature but the rest of the city re-built after the war in square soviet architecture. A waste of 3 days, after day 1 we pretty much just drank in the hostel all day because there was nothing else worth exploring.

They also have Chiriqui in Panama as one of the recommendations. There isn't much there at all and it's about a 6 and a half hour drive from the airport. You would be driving past several areas that would be much nicer.

Hey, if you want to be lonely, there aren't many better places to go than Edmonton.

When I was in Croatia, I used the Rick Steves travel guide to go on self-guided tours. Not "Lonely Planet", but the same basic idea. It was a good book for that, and also had tips on things like ferries and train travel, as well as recommended places to stay.
I stayed in one of the places recommended in the book and mentioned to the owner that I got the recommendation from the book. She told me that he gets to stay there for free any time, and is a regular. Apparently we literally just missed him. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice place, but it made me realize what was actually going on.
I bet when people who work for Lonely Planet show up to check in, they aren't hiding the fact that they are going to put the experience in a book and get treated like royalty. In fact, when I was in Mexico at a resort, there were travel writers staying there and they were fawned over by the staff while the normies were pretty much being ignored. I bet they got excellent reviews.

There's still travel writers? I thought they were replaced by instagram chicks in thongs.

Broberg now has 7 points in 8 games, 3 points less than the entire oilers D. He now has more points than Drai, and would be second in scoring on that crap team.
$4.5M might actually end up looking like a helluva bargain. Ha, stupid oilers.
