You should consider Criterion’s streaming service if you haven’t already. Most of Kurosawa’s films will be on there. I really second the recommendation for High and Low but you can’t go wrong with any of them really.
Also, don’t sleep on early Kubrick. Paths of Glory and Lolita rank with his best work imo.

If you’re in Calgary the library has a free subscription to Kanopy. Lots of good movies on there. A number from the Criterion Collection, including Kurosawa’s most well known films.

It's ok, but It's not even top 10 for movies released that year.

99 was a good year, but not having Eyes Wide Shut in the top 10 is bonkers.

Finally got around to watching Clockwork Orange, what a fantastic film. It was challenging, thought provoking, terrifying, engaging and captivating. This was a movie made for a mature audience, I absolutely loved it.
It also made me realize something. I always thought the best decade of film was the 80s, so many classics from that era. But now I realize it's actually the 70s that was the height of American cinema.

The American New Wave ruled, we likely won't ever see something like that in Hollywood cinema again.

It was a perfect storm of amazing talent being unshackled by the hays code and studios willing to give directors creative freedom. 70s films were also more catered to adults and the 80s we start to see film being geared towards kids/teens.

for the actual craft of filmmaking craft, sure EWS is a top movie.
but here are movies from 1999 I either think are better movies, or I enjoyed way more.
In no particular order
-Being John Malkovich
-Sleepy Hollow
-Office space
-The Sixth sense
-The Mummy. (good example of a movie that's not "great" but I'm always entertained watching it. 10/10 for a fun rewatchable movie that if I see it's on, I always catch a bit of it)
-The Matrix
-American Beauty
- Fight club
Galaxy Quest
Election
Toy Story 2
Heck, I liked Notting Hill and the Boondock Saints more.

Okay so it's a 'best' vs 'favorite/enjoyment' list. Fair enough. It's also wild to me you don't have The Talented Mr. Ripley on this list, but taste is subjective! So carry on.

I watched Dumb Money yesterday, the film that detailed the Game Stop stock craze. Such a cool and interesting story overall that I was familiar with but didn't fully understand the details of how it started. It has a bit of the same vibe that The Big Short did, but this was a much more human story. The director takes the time to understand the various characters so that we feel invested in the story. Paul Dano gives an authentic performance and leads the ensemble. Pete Davidson is pretty spot on in his limited role. The film suffers from being a little scattered and uneven at times, but overall is a very enjoyable film.
8/10. Would recommend.

That also is better the EWS.
Sorry. I just can't get behind Eyes Wide Shut being a great movie let alone a top move of all time.

Was planning on seeing it this week, the only thing discouraging me is not wanting to look at Pete Davidson's stupid face. Glad to hear his screen time is limited.

LOL, I get it. I think he annoys me because so many people seem to love him for no apparent reason. His appeal was only apparent to me on a rare occasion on SNL, and even less after he left, but he was enjoyable in this. He has an ability to portray certain characters with an authenticity that is hard for for many comedians to do. He doesn't mind looking like a dip#### in the pursuit of the craft. I just don't find him terribly funny to begin with, but I don't hate him either.

I actually was aware of his standup and followed him before he got the SNL gig, thought he was decent. I don't watch SNL anymore, I must have grown out of sketch comedy, it's painful and incredibly unfunny to me now.
But yeah, he's incredibly overrated.

I thought he was great in The King of Staten Island.

I would love your thoughts on Brewster McCloud (1970) and Rollerball (1975).
I found them...weird to say the least.Maybe I couldn't appreciate the cultural context though.

I just looked up Brewster McCloud and it sounds super interesting, I'm going to keep my eye out for it now. I love Altman think he's one of the best directors, The Player was fantastic and Images is also super underrated horror/thriller.
The original Rollerball is fantastic, love the concept and the idea. Again it's got that gritty 70s flavor, and is a complex sci fi film that deals with individuals vs the collective, among other things. I see some similarities between Rollerball and Hunger Games, wonder if one influenced the other. Now the remake is one of the worst movies of all time, stay away from it at all costs.
