Because of a recent basement project, I rewatched the Tim Burton Batman movies. They both hold up really well, with Batman Returns being even weirder than I remember it being (it's the more "Burton-y" movie of the two). The villains were all perfectly cast, and Michael Keaton is still my favourite Batman.

Batman Returns has probably aged the best of the original batman movies.

I totally get why people freaked out because it's not a 'kids movie' but it's also the movie that launched 1000 kinks in millenials so. Who's to say if that's good or bad.

Pfeffer should have won an Oscar.

Ummm....am I correct in assuming that...you're having your basement renovated so you re-watched the Burton Batman films while furiously scribbling notes about how to instruct your contractor on how you'd like your own Batcave?

Because otherwise 'Batman Movies' and 'Basement Renovations' are a bit of a non sequitur.

If it weren't for my basement being already done up in the "portal to Lovecraftian-madness" style, the Batcave would be a good choice.

My sister and I also just re-watched Batman, Batman Returns and Batman Forever in the last week. The drop-off between Returns and Forever was just awful.

First time I watched Batman Forever it felt like I was watching the old TV series without the laughs.

Now we have to watch Batman and Robin, which is even worse but for some reason is my sister’s favorite lol.

Batman and Robin might be better than Forever because it goes FULL Camp. Whereas Forever is trying to have it both ways.

EDIT: lol at posting this right under the previous post that was posted as I type.

Uma Thurman as poison ivy is the only reason to watch Batman and robin. Even with that awful script she nailed it.

I've seen 3 Kubrick films and loved them all. The Shining might be my favorite horror film ever and 2001 was such a great first time watch this year. Plus I really like Eyes Wide Shut, underrated thriller. Really looking forward to seeing Clockwork Orange, might be my next classic that I cross off the list.

There are 2 Kurosawa films in particular that I'm dying to watch; 7 Samurai and Ikiru. But he's a director that I really need to watch.

Cheers to an evening of the ol' "ultra-violence"!

7 Samurai is in my top 3 of all time. Ikiru is great.

Here's a selection by decade(ish)

Rashomon. It will haunt you. Also notably the first film to point the camera toward the sun (classic shot through the trees).

Yojimbo. Every classic western is based off Yojimbo. You can't unsee the inspiration in westerns after watching it.

Ran is based off King Lear. It's pretty epic, and one of the few films he did in color.

Dreams is a series of short films. It's him at his most expressive with color, sound, imagery etc. It's ####ing beautiful. One of my favorite films ever, even if there's little to no plot. Has a fun moment where Martin Scorsese plays Vincent van Gogh.

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I know a bunch of those titles are available from Criterion (I think some even in 4K), so their next sale I will have to pick up those. I love discovering new great movies from around the globe, and besides some horror and anime films I haven't seen many Japanese films.

Would also recommend High and Low. Just watched that one recently and really enjoyed it.

I do really appreciate the older movies where they would spent the time to a tell a great story. This movie is almost 2.5 hours and it uses it to tell a compelling thrilling story with conflict, grief, greed and social commentary. So many movies today are 2.5 hours long and the story is non-sense garbage.

Well, we watched it last night. For a superhero movie, it’s meh. But as a comedy, it’s a 10 lol.

Clooney is okay when he’s Bruce Wayne but as Batman, it’s just awkward.

Slotherhouse is way better than I expected. I recommend it if you like cheesy slasher flicks.

Here's the last one for free on Youtube

Cut to 5:30 for a glimpse. His frame composition is stunning. He's truly a student of the master painters.

My favorite is "The Blizzard"
