I think that this is an alarmist position.
I certainly think that economic imperialism is the long game, but it makes no sense for the USA to take on the administrative Burdon.
I think this is a naive position.

We've had a good glimpse at how he's handling administrative burden in his own county. Scorched earth policy on the entire government. It is unprecedented.
He has mused about absorbing Canada multiple times. He waxes poetic back to a time before WWI when America was "great" or something. He is guided by "manifest destiny" and Project 2025.
The norms are out the window. He's showing us exactly who he is, with both domestic and foreign policy, and you can be sure that Canada and its resources are absolutely on his radar.

It may yet prove to be a bluff, but a price has already been paid. Canadians have already started boycotting American products, switching to made in Canada where possible, and governments have started non-tarriff anti-US actions, like Ford cancelling the $100MM starlink contract.
It's been an expensive bluff so far. We will see if he can try to balance it out by getting Canada to commit to the border security measures we have already announced.
Getting a refund for the Mariners tickets I bought, Oregon/Washington trip this summer is cancelled. Told them I won't be back during the next 4 years.

It’s so… painful. They could support the redistribution of wealth and stave off a revolution and go back to still being the richest people on the planet… and enjoy it with some stability…. ####ing mind-numbing.
I imagine that average people are just pieces on a game board to someone that rich. Their own version of The Truman Show or Sim City.
Now he's blabbering on about Canadian banking regulations. I don't see any way that he drops these tariffs. This has nothing to do with fentanyl, or the border, or trade deficits, or our banks. Dude just clearly has some weird obsessive axe to grind when it comes to Canada and is hellbent on destroying the decades-long relationship between our two countries. This whole thing is so unbelievably infuriating.
In a social media post after his call with Trudeau wrapped, Trump chastised Canada for not allowing U.S. banks to "open or do business there."
Until this point, Trump has framed the tariffs as a way to hit back at Canada for the ongoing trade deficit and supposed inaction on drugs and migrants crossing the northern border into the U.S. — his stated concerns about banking fairness are a new development.
A number of American banks do business in Canada with large lending and commercial and investment banking operations, among other functions, on this side of the 49th parallel.
Personal banking in Canada is largely the domain of Canadian-based banks, due to stringent federal regulations designed to protect against bank failures. According to government figures, Canada's large banks hold more than 93 per cent of all domestic banking assets. Canadian banks are routinely ranked among the safest in the world.
Last night, Trump also raised the Canadian banking system with reporters after landing back in D.C. after a weekend at his Florida estate.
"Canada's been very abusive of the United States for many years. They don't allow our banks. Did you know that? Canada does not allow banks to go in. If you think about it, that's pretty amazing," he said.

You know in Blazing Saddles where they built a fake town to fool the bad guys? Anyone up for building a fake Bank of America on the vacant lot down the street?
Lets say our tariffs drop like Mexico's did this morning. I don't want us to go back to the Canadian norm and rely heavily on the United States for everything. This should be the start of forward thinking as Canadians. The start of the golden era, I want to call it the maple era.
But something tells me, and its my fear as a Canadian, that if a deal pops up after Trudeau and Trumps talk today, that passive Canadian mentality will come back. Canadians will blow a sigh of relief and we will go back into our old ways of complacency. This is our wake up call. Time to pick up the phone and respond.

We should have started doing this 30 years ago.
We should be energy independent.
When COVID happened we had to procure vaccines. You know what? Because of historical nonsense and some hurt feelings, Cuba made their own vaccine.
We couldnt do that.
Trump stole PPE supplies destined for Canada for America.
When he says 'America First' he means it.
Why cant we make our own PPE?
We have been reliant on others, largely the USA, for so long its like we dont know any other way.
And, frankly, I think if one were to go to a Psychologist and ask them to analyze Canada as a person? I dont think we'd like the answer.
And its not Harper's fault or Trudeau's fault or Singh's fault or....whoever, Elizabeth May? Although she hasnt helped much its also not her fault.
Its all of our faults. And it has been for a long time.
In the immortal words spoken in Full Metal Jacket..."Its a giant #### sandwich and we're all gonna have to take a bite."

We won't know until tomorrow. And even then, an about face at this point doesn't mean they were a bluff.
Yeah I agree. A little early to call anything right now. Even if tariffs go into effect, how long do they last?
Will be interesting to see if the "buy Canadian, boycott US" rhetoric has any teeth over time as US companies report their results. I don't expect to see much of an impact especially with the trade imbalance that already exists.
