Two parties. It could be structured such that he doesn’t come out behind but Leafs have to agree to structure it that way. They are not a charity are they?
Do they want to set a precedent of rewarding a holdout?
I hope he agrees in principal but is old school enough to use a fax machine and it jams and doesn’t get in on time

Everything I have heard is the exact opposite. He wants to stay a Leaf and the Leafs want to keep him.

Yeah they want to keep him for this season and go all in for the cup. Then next offseason they will pretty well have to shed salary. There's just no way they can keep all those forwards and still ice even an average blue line.

If that was the case, 300k wouldnt hold this back. Ive heard a zillion rumors going either way. This is still a really embarassing scenario.
Ive heard all the tap dancing from the leafs. And I've heard the platitudes from the Nyander camp too. This shouldn't be hard if both parties want to stay together.

Nylander isn’t even counting against the cap and they can’t ice an average blue line

Yes and Dubas said his intention was to keep all four. We will see how he manages that.

Look at Subban's bridge contract before he signed his 9M a year contract. It was under 3M.
Look at Johansens career. Signs 4M middle-contract after 60+ points and then gets 8M.
Rightfully or wrongfully, teams put huge discounts on the first years of RFA contracts. RFA years, especially early ones, are worth nothing compared to UFA years. He'll still be the same age for UFA whether he signs or not, unlike other RFAs, and a reason he does have a bargaining chip here.
So he doesn't sign at 6.5x6 this year, sits out of the NHL, plays in KHL for ~3M equivalency (taxes and the like).
Then he signs a ~7x5 next year and comes out just fine. As long as he doesn't get injured or have a terrible year in the KHL (which is a risk, as much as a good year would be a reward).

Under the CBA, he can't get a NTC that kicks in by the time the leafs have to re-sign Matthews, Marner & Kapanen.
Apparently it's not all about the money, at least not directly. We've heard time and again throughout this fiasco that Nylander wants a high enough salary that the leafs will have a hard time flipping his contract upon signing it.
Props to Nylander making life more difficult for that organization, even if the main reason he wants to remain there is to ensure the other talented forwards bump up his stats.

Less than 15 minutes. I didn't think it would come this close to the wire.

Read a tweet saying that the contract has to be signed and Filed before 5p. meaning the process should have been started 10-15 minutes ago if this was going to get done?

The closer we get, the more I think he might sit out.
This is obviously based on nothing but my gut feeling of course.

Dubas must have some real job certainty if hes juggling this close to the edge.

Yeah I think he's out for the year. Unless they're doing the entertainment biz thing and holding out the info for 5p.m.
