With at least 3 teams looking for a GM Burke is going to have to do a really good sell job if he wants the right candidate. Does it put us at a disadvantage having someone as controlling as Burke, as president of Hockey operations, compared to teams where a new GM may have more of a free reign??
It depends on the candidate. Not every candidate will be as keen on the Flames' organisational structure, but by the same token, those are likely not the sorts of people that Burke will be targeting in the first place. With more and more teams moving towards this kind of model, I expect that Burke's position is not much of a determent to finding and hiring the best man for the job.

I disagree. I think Burke's position is going to be a determent to finding and hiring the best man for the job. There's a difference between having an organizational structure where the President acts more like a senior advisor who oversees everything and acts more like a rubber stamper and an organizational structure where the President intends to make every single decision and the GM simply does the legwork.

If you look around, most teams with this management structure have an inexperienced President who isn't looking to call the shots. Burke on the other hand made no secret that he's the one making the decisions. It places the Flames at a competitive disadvantage as far as hiring the best man for the job because guys who want to run their own team want as much autonomy as possible.

Since we don't really know anything about the organisational structure in the Flames hockey operations department, I don't see how you can make such a clean distinction of the next Flames GM as one who "simply does the legwork". Put plainly: You don't know what will be entailed in the position, and to that end you have no idea beyond Burke's published criteria about what sort of candidate the team wants, nor which candidates would be best suited to THIS position. How can you even know who is the best man for the job without knowing much at all about the job itself?

He did? Not from anything that I have seen. Do you have a link to where he has made such clear statements?

You are making a global claim for the group of potential NHL GMs that you simply cannot make. Once again, we DON'T KNOW anything about the organisational structure, nor about the specific responsibilities of the incoming Flames' GM. Without knowing any of this, it is extremely difficult to make any claims about both who is the best man for the job, and also which specific candidates such a position either appeals to or does not.

All this to say that I don't expect the Flames to have much trouble finding a qualified, experienced, and skilled candidate.

On Sportsnet last night John Garrett was talking about Trevor Linden asking Bruins President Cam Neely permission to talk to Jim Benning. He mentioned Benning is a big possibility since Linden and Benning used to be teammates.
He also mentioned Mike Johnston, head coach of Portland Winter Hawks(WHL) might be in running to replace the soon to be fired Torts.

Based on texts & phone calls I've had the past few days, sounds like Brian Burke and the #Flames have found their man for the GM job.

I would tend to think that this coming out the same day as McPhee is fired should be an atom bomb to the McPhee dissenters.

It's one hell of a coincidence isn't it?

I know it is not a done deal and only a rumour but these dinosaurs do like to stick together, shame they don't let anyone new play in the top sand pit.

Friedman said on HNIC that Brad Treliving interviewed for the GM job. Currently Vice President of Hockey Operations & Assistant General Manager for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Here's an article on Treliving:

Quote:
"Crazy work ethic," Tippett said of the Coyotes assistant GM. "His commitment to doing the job right is phenomenal. Sometimes you just scratch your head and say, 'Brad, take a break here.' He’s all-in all the time."

"You look at our situation and the budgets we were dealing with, it's hard to make mistakes," Tippett said. "A guy like [Rob] Klinkhammer is a great example. [Treliving] sniffed this guy out and said this guy would be a great fit for how we play, and he's been great for us."

I heard there is interest in Bobby Smith for the job, no idea if he was interviewed though.

For a nameless tweet and the timing of it I thought for sure it would segway into rumors of McPhee coming to CGY. Now with Friedman coming out and saying tonight Treliving, I admit my assumption could be wrong.

But, I also believe this is going to happen pretty fast now these tidbits are now starting to float out there. Calgary is usually pretty good at keeping the lid tight on these things right up until they go down.

So I'm going to hazard a guess and say an announcement will be made sometime early next week.

EDIT: And I'm sure a ton of CP folk will be breathing a heavy sigh of relief that it won't be McPhee.

Treliving has an excellent resume. He's excelled wherever he's put his hands to, and I would welcome the idea.

Within the mix of names like Benning, Hextall, and Botterill....Treliving would be an excellent pickup.

Edit: A good point to note is that he's remained in his role for such a lengthy period of time. It shows he's resilient, and performs his duties to the point that he's been worth keeping around for his lengthy tenure.

Sounds like a great candidate, Treliving. Should be a good fit in our culture.
