Apparently the ‘latest’ from Friedman according to Nault is the Flames are still at 8x9.5 and not crazy about the ask from Gaudreaus camp being higher than that… this conflicts greatly with the reporting from Seravalli who said the Flames were reportedly prepared to back up the brinks truck. If the flames position is still 8x9.5 this late into the game (I don’t think it is, I think they’ve come up from that) then Gaudreau is as good as gone. Honestly I’m just looking forward to wte the answer is at this point because im tired of the all over the place reporting from all these ‘insiders’.

Hard to know what to believe at this point. I really wish Treliving could have moved Lucic at the deadline to free up UFA possibilities if Gaudreau doesn't sign.

Sounds like Friedman hasn’t heard anything new
Highly doubt the Flames are sticking to that 8x9.5 number this far into the negotiation, if it’s even true (remember Treliving saying there’s a lot of incorrect speculation right now)

I have a hard time believing that the flames are still at 9.5.
If I had to guess, Gaudreau will be signing at no lower than 10.5 and no higher than 11 for an 8 year deal.
9.5 is just unrealistic.

The Calgary Flames: totally okay with spending $5.25M on a 4th line LW, $6.375M on a centre who can’t play defence, and nearly $6M on their bottom pairing - but refusing to pay elite talent what they deserve.
|
Or you know...trying to negotiate the best deal possible.
There have been indications from others that the offer is already at $10M now and the sides continue to talk.
They seem more than willing to pay Gaudreau but I do get why they aren't just giving him asking price and are trying to get the best deal possible.

^^^ totally agree, that reporting from Friedman is laughable IMO. If it is true this is why we can’t have anything nice lol.

I'm not crazy about signing Johnny to a 10+ mill per deal. The whole team makeup changes with a deal like that, I'm not saying he isn't worth it but is it right for the team right now?
Some are going to say that the team is very close and they just need a little more time or something but having a career year on a contract year always kind of scares me. Is this the new norm? Is that line going to always be like this? If they pay their top 2 wingers 10+ will they be able to afford to build a team around them? If something happens and they have to trade him, will his contract be moveable?
To me it's not as simple as "he's our best player so pay him whatever he wants" weather he's worth it or not, I think that's why a deal hasn't been made yet. But that's just me.

The Devils admitted there was a deal on the table for the 2nd pick overall. They never admitted who the deal was for, but the two teams and players connected to the Devils for this pick were Vancouver and TJ Miller and Calgary and Matthew Tkachuk. The buzz the hours before the draft was all related to Tkachuk. You can ignore that if you wish, but that was the word on the street from multiple people at the draft. You know, kind of like the word has been Johnny was going to listen to other offers and consider a move to the east coast. Ignore these things at your peril.

Yeah, how dare we point out salary inefficiencies on a team we love when we can look at recent Stanley Cup champions and see how well they manage the salary cap. Madness I say!
All we have to talk about right now is what the insiders are tweeting.

nah, I don't buy this one bit. I mean, we'd all love to have Johnny at $9.5m, but that's just unrealistic and the Flames know it. No way they are that daft.

Coleman, who came here on Gaudreau's recommendation, will be demanding a trade. Lindholm will see his linemates both go and will likely make it abundantly clear he has no interest in re-upping when his contract ends as he will see the lack of future for this team. Same with Hanifin. With the top players all gone how long will Markstrom want to hang around? Dominoes are there ready to fall. Gaudreau is the most important player to this team and it is critical they get him under contract, otherwise the consequences will be severe and widespread. I think the Flames know this and will pay up to $11M. That would be all the potential savings from Lucic disappearing being dumped into Gaudreau's salary. They just have to sell Gaudreau on Calgary being the best place for his growing family and future children.
|
I actually think that Tkachuk is more likely to sign a long term deal this summer if Gaudreau is gone. In fact I’m pretty sure he’d want to cash in on the 100 point season, because he won’t be hitting close to the same numbers without Gaudreau. Think about how much money he would lose on a long term contract as a 70pt player compared to a 100!

Do you have anything substantial that says Tkachuk to NJ? I just don’t buy that was in the cards. I saw they were in talks with Chicago about Debrincat.
I also don’t think the Devils said there was a deal on the table. They said they had discussions about the pick. It’s anyone’s guess how close those discussions actually got to materializing into anything.

The team must consider downstream effects of losing a player like Gaudreau. What is the domino effect? Imagine what would happen in Edmonton if the Oilers lost McDavid or Pittsburgh lost Crosby? The ability to attract and retain players goes down dramatically. I think the Flames have to sign Gaudreau and then have to move Tkachuk for younger cost-controlled players. That should keep the band mostly together.

Yeah and the big thing is Tkachuk is likely to come within $500k of whatever Gaudreau signs for (if he wants to stay).
So you need to be prudent with that.
The rumored delta in this thread is Flames are at $10M, and Gaudreau's camp is at $11.5M. Really at this point in negotiations that isn't a very big gap.
But the Flames can't just jump right to $11.5M here - that likely means that Tkachuk want's at least $11M and the Flames have $22.5M tied up in two LWs.
However if they can get Gaudreau for $10.5M, then maybe that means Tkahuk is closer to $10M...and now you have $2M more cap space to work with than you would if you just give Gaudreau exactly what he is asking for.
You will see all the "insiders" talking about Gaudreau's ask, and how he's going to look at what's available on the open market today, because his side will be leaking info to try to put pressure on the Flames.
But in the end both sides have until 10PM tomorrow to work out a deal, and they are going to use all of that time to try and get the best deal possible. This was always going to be the outcome.

I was just looking for clarification as your original post was confusing.

It was just me taking a shot at Monahan’s inability to be an effective 200 foot player, and the team not willing to trade him for “50 cents on the dollar” in previous off-seasons.
