That's a confusing play. Doesn't that mean on a double play ball, as long as the runner at 1st stays on the base - there wouldn't be a DP?
I can't get my head around what should happen there. I'm sure that was the right call but I'm utterly confused by it.

Most important thing today will be if Happ can continue to look like Happ.
I'm not confident that Estrada will sort himself out this season. So Happ needs to return to form, Sanchez needs to be himself, and then Stroman and Dickey need to step up.

Jiri he has to tag the runner first. Touching the bag takes off the force. Where the runner is doesn't matter. He isn't 'safe' from a tag on the base

The call was right

If Smoak touches the runner first, he would be out.

But because he toughed the base first, there is no longer a force at 2nd and the runner can go back to first.

Smoak simply screwed it up

Ah yes. It was touching the base that caused it. Now I get it.

Donaldson sure doesn't like being pitched inside. Not sure what he expects, he hangs all over the plate.

PLEASE can we stop saying cut down the swing on every strikeout.
Since that at bat, Rodriguez has retired 11 of 12 batters.

At the time, he had thrown 60 odd pitches, with one out in the 3rd. Runners on 1st and 2nd. The Red Sox had activity in the pen. The Sox had just committed a fielding error.

If he puts that ball in play, they could have blown the game open and gotten deep into the Sox' bullpen.

Instead, they let Rodriguez off the hook and now it's 3-1 in the 7th.

Same story, game after game after game.

I'm sorry, but simply saying they have missed a ton of hit-able pitches does not do justice to the fact that their strike outs are up 20% this year.

20%.

Edit: and now the Sox are 1st and 3rd with no outs and Happ is the first pitcher out of the game.

Good play by Bautista getting himself in front of the bounce.

Let's hope we get out of this and just allow 1.

But Enoch, here is the part I don't understand from your posts. You assume if he 'cut down his swing' he would have done more damage.

Stat's and analysis have constantly showed this isn't the case.

A double play here would be so huge.

Which stats and analyses are those?

Situational hitting is a thing. Always has been.

This wasnt a situation where he could move the runners. It was 1st and 2nd. Were not talking a fly ball or grounder to the right situation.

He needed a hit. Theres a reason all teams care about is OBP and Slugging, not single hitters.

On Fox, they just did a good job illustrating Ramirez and Hill adjusting to how Happ was pitching them and going the other way with the outside pitches. And they knocked Happ out of the game.

A hit doesn't have to mean a homer. With 2 strikes, youu have to shorten the swing and make contact.

Nothing good happens from a strike out.

How is this a debate?
