Goodfellas and Casino have so many similarities, you can almost treat Casino as a redo of Goodfellas.
It's not every movie that's the same, but, as a I said before, a lot of his most famous movies are very similar. He has a lot more to offer beyond that though.
|
I think it is fair to say that Scorsese is best known for the gangster movies, they are certainly his most well-known and critically-acclaimed, and like I said I do agree that Goodfellas and Casino are inextricably linked in all the similarities you mention.
Does Scorsese have a "style"? Absolutely. Do they all look exactly alike? Some more than others, again Goodfellas and Casino being the most blatant.
Does he use narration in many of his movies? Absolutely. All of them? No.
That said, I think he's a lot like Steven Spielberg in that: 1) outside of the ones he's very very famous for, he has actually done a very wide variety of movies, 2) not every movie he made was a hit, and 3) even the ones that weren't hits weren't necessarily bad.
I really liked Hugo, which I think a lot of people forget Scorsese even did. It was somewhat of a hit with critics (it did after all get an Best Picture nomination) but only did so-so financially. Similarly, I like the 1989 movie Always, for a long time considered one of Spielberg's greatest "misses" up there with 1941. You can see the respective director's fingerprints all over those movies, but I struggle to think of other movies in their respective repertoires that are very much like them.

I mean Michael Mann sucks and is an extremely overrated director that should have stuck to TV, but Heat and Manhunter are his only good movies.

Collateral is an all timer right up there with Heat imo.

Any charitable feelings I had about Mann went out the window when Ali came out.
Tokyo Vice I guess was pretty good though but that falls into the "should have stuck to TV" theme.

I remember very little about The Insider but I do recall thinking it was quite good also. And yeah Collateral is a great movie.

The Insider is a master class in creating tension and drama when very little actually happens in a scene. It's a brilliant film.

Mann's two "bad" movies were biopics. Perhaps Scorsese shouldve done them instead...

Also I am heavily skeptical that 'Hancock' was 'based on a true story.'

No discussion of great directors is complete without mentioning Brian Levant. Talk about a catalogue full of hits

He's no Roger Corman.

No joke: I think there's a very compelling argument to be made that Roger Corman is the single most influential filmmaker of the last 70 years.

Agreed. It’s an incredible film, and arguably Mann’s finest work IMO. Terrific acting from both Pacino and Crowe as well.

Fun fact about Martin Scorsese is that he's literally saving cinema around the globe. Not only is he preserving old film prints and saving them from destruction in America, he also started the non profit World Cinema Project which preserves important films from around the world where they may not necessarily have the means to preserve them for future generations. To date, 54 films from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Central America, South America, and the Middle East have been restored, preserved and exhibited for a global audience.

All this Scorcese talk has inspired me to watch Cape Fear again, which is an all time classic. The nods to Hitchcock, De Niro filing his teeth down, and a fantastic Nick Nolte. Might watch Goodfellas next, or Raging Bull, or Silence, a lot of incredible options.

I watched Worth on the plane last night.
Didn't expect much but was enjoyable.
