I am really excited for Friday. I just think the Flames make so much sense as a trading partner.

If we could come away from the draft with Puljujarvi, Hartnell, and Fleury I am would be so pumped!

Gaudreau-Monahan-Puljujarvi
Shinkaruk-Bennett-Hartnell
Colborne-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Stajan-Bouma

Gio-Brodie
Jokkipakka-Hamilton
Wotherspoon-Engellend

Fleury
Ortio

Playoffs!!!
If you can believe the one Finnish poster (not sure if mods verified his info) then the Jackets aren't high on either of the Finns.

Obviously there are only two teams with a better pick than us, and I don't see Vancouver as being interested or having the assets to move up. I'm thinking that Edmonton could package nuge though for the pick and take a contract back, a price we wouldn't be willing to match.

Oilers need to draft a d-man though, which they can do in their current spot. I bet the offers have come from teams below the Flames (if there have actually been any).

Calgary is in a really good spot. Edmonton needs to use their assets on their blue line. Vancouver already lacks picks and prospects and want to use their cap space to get a good player like Eriksson.

The Flames have the assets, and the organizational need to go after this pick.

I agree that we're in a great position given our 1st rounder, picks, reasonable prospect depth and intelligent GM. I just fear the oilers might actually start breaking things down at the inopportune moment for us. If they gave up nuge, they could likely keep the number 4, trade down and get a good d man.

McKenzie just threw another wrinkle into things.

Jets MAY be targeting Puljujarvi and not Laine, like everyone seems to think.

I'm reasonably confident TOR will take Auston Matthews at No. 1. I'm not nearly as confident WPG will automatically take Patrik Laine at 2.

I am not saying WPG won't take Laine but I am saying, IMO, Jesse Puljujarvi may be a legit consideration at No. 2 for the Jets.

Jets, as is their style, haven't tipped hand but several teams told me to not rule out notion of Puljujarvi going 2nd overall to WPG.
Personally, I still think they're taking Laine but it's another good reason for CBJ to hold onto #3 until right before they have to pick.

It's been rumoured for a while the Jets are torn between the two Fins which is what I would expect from the best drafting team in the league as Puljujarvi could end up the better player when all is said and done. I still think they go with Laine but it's probably not a slam dunk.

The plot thickens.... And my pants got a little wet...

Or the jackets are leaking the story to up the value of #3

If he's there, would they jackets still look to trade seeing as they're after a centre?

The rumour is that Columbus isn't 100% sold on Puljujarvi. There's been nothing mentioned in regards to their opinion about Laine. If he's on the board at 3 they'll probably take him with little hesitation.

With the kind of season Laine has had as an 18-year-old it really surprises me that there's little-to-no conversation about him going 1st overall. Part of me suspects that it's due to positional bias, and everyone knows the Leafs are desperate for a C. I think Laine is more likely to be a superstar player than anyone in the draft.

There was plenty of chatter about Laine potentially going #1 during the world championships.

Yes, the Oilers need to draft a defenseman in the worst way. Everyone knows that. But the Oilers will take a forward because they are the Oilers and that is what they do. Plus, didn't you know you should take BPA because you will be able to trade that guy to another team to address needs on your team later?

My thoughts on the Oilers is they will make a big trade with Taylor Hall which will open the door to draft Tkachuk who would be a great fit next to McDavid (I also think a great fit next to Bennett)

I still think the Flames will move up to 3, I just think they might have to give up a little more than some on here are expecting. It won't just be #6 and some seconds... Like I said before, I think they official announcement will be made right after CBJ is on the clock but the deal will have already been done.

Aaron Portzline @Aportzline
Many convinced #CBJ trading the No. 3 overall pick. It's all over the place across the league. Could Jarmo know something about the Finns?

I have a feeling Avs come in with a blockbuster deal involving the #3 and Duchene.

He's $6 mill a year isn't he? There would have to be a lot of salary going out for that to work, no? And Colorado isn't a team who likes to pay people to play, let alone not to.

You have some of that right finally!

Most of the BPA available group don't just assume you're going to trade the guy you pick though.

Prospects come on, some fail, guys get hurt, guys retire, GMs ask about existing players. Impossible to know what the team will look like in 2, 3 or 5 years.

Best way to protect against that is to just draft the best asset and let the chips fall where they may.

The Flames didn't have a center four years ago. Cammalleri was taking draws on the top line. They tried Backlund before he was ready. Then in 13 months the Flames had Monahan and Bennett down the middle. You just don't know.

That is a good theory. If the Avs take back a contract or 2 then it makes sense for both teams.

I think CBJ will see if Laine is available at 3. If not, they trade down.

Likely what's holding the Flames up on a goalie.
