It might be a cultural thing in the NHL where that would just never happen.

Would be odd but not against the rules or anything. I suppose it's a possibility though as if I was the GM of the Jackets that wanted Brown I don't know if I would feel comfortable trading down to 6 and expecting Brown to be there knowing how unpredictable Dim Jim is. Stranger than the Jackets putting a jersey over Puljarjarvi would be them going up again at 6 to put a jersey on Brown while and the Flames not officially selecting a player in first round despite getting the 3rd overall picked player within minutes of him being drafted. I suppose a quick change of jersey at the tables would be done to get Puljarjarvi in a Flames jersey.

The reason those trades happen in the NBA and NFL is because their rookie contract values are linked to the player's draft position. In the NHL, there is no linkage between draft position and the entry-level salary, so there's no reason for teams to make those types of trades.

That's not why Rivers and Manning were swapped. Manning refused to play for the Chargers which weakened their leverage to trade the 1st overall pick so they picked him anyway and then traded him to the Giants for Rivers, a 1st and 3rd round pick. Pretty astute move really by A.J. Smith.

So, basically the Lindros situation, but they didn't wait a year hoping he'd change his mind.

#CBJ GM Jarmo Kekalainen says he's had "about 10" offers total for No. 3 pick, including several today. "Very good offers."

Kekalainen said #CBJ wouldn't trade No. 3 pick - even if offer is worthy - until first two players go off the board in Friday's first round.

Sounds like the behaviour of a GM who wants to move the pick. Excellent.

I have no idea why he doesn't seem to like JP, but I sincerely hope it results in him becoming a Flame. I know it won't happen, but I can't help but be hyped.

Yea, makes sense. It's obviously unlikely, but if Laine or Matthews fall, they don't want to be the team that traded the pick away.

Pretty happy about Kek not moving #3 until he's on the clock. Gives him 3 minutes to make a decision instead of a day or two.

Just like all the great offers Dale Tallon was saying he received for the first overall pick in 2014. I don't think many GM's actually bite on this stuff anymore.

He's also forcing teams to get their best offers in prior to the draft, and will then likely ask for a sweetener at the 11th hour.

Yeah. But did he need to state it publicly? Ends up talking down his potential pick in a small way.

Not really. He'll have his return picked out. Decision is likely made before the draft starts. I can understand him hedging on the rare chance Laine or Matthews fall

Or hanging on in case they receive an over-the-top offer just before they pick. Literally no reason to make the trade sooner than their third pick.

It really seems like he wants to move the pick. Seems surprising he wouldn't race to draft Puljujarvi. Maybe their scouts have a love for Brown that can only be matched by the Weusbroad Jankowski pick. They see something there where they believe Brown could be a Franchise centre.
I am really excited for Friday. I just think the Flames make so much sense as a trading partner.
If we could come away from the draft with Puljujarvi, Hartnell, and Fleury I am would be so pumped!
Gaudreau-Monahan-Puljujarvi
Shinkaruk-Bennett-Hartnell
Colborne-Backlund-Frolik
Ferland-Stajan-Bouma
Gio-Brodie
Jokkipakka-Hamilton
Wotherspoon-Engellend
Fleury
Ortio
Playoffs!!!
