I would’ve preferred to see BT take the initiative after learning that Johnny wasn’t signing. I would also love to know if there was any contingency plan in place or the eggs were firmly placed in the basket.

I wonder if a trade could’ve been made with Philly to take JVR and some futures so they could sign Johnny. There is no one else out there worth signing excess cap on. You can sell the futures as free money for someone that wasn’t going to sign here. Johnny goes go preferred destination and Philly can argue that the whole thing was essentially a trade for a superstar player

I understand we will never know what plans were in place in case Johnny didn’t sign but you think there would’ve been something other than … nothing

It's interesting to look at the next few picks after Coronato:

Isak Rosen - small Swedish winger
Goalie
Brennan Othmann - average size winger OHL - great D+1 stats (FWIW)
Zac Bolduc - C from QMJHL - great D+1
NCAA C
Russian C
Goalie

So if we want to play the 'safe' game, Othmann and Bolduc seem like the real options.

Coronato Central Scouting = 9th NA; Mackenzie = 13th; Button = 11th
Othmann CS 8th NA; M = 16th; B = 17th
Bolduc CS = 17th NA; M = 19th; B = 18th
Rosen CS = 8th EUR; M=18th; B = 28th

I'd also lean to a Centre whenever possible, but it seems like any other pick would have been going off the board for prospect quality.

As far as anyone can tell, he learned with maybe 2 hours left.

Yup, Gaudreau gave Treliving a strong kick in the balls. He thought he had the deal done I think

If the replace BT, I don't want you see an even nicer guy take over.
Would be time for a no nonsense, business first GM.

But, I agree with those saying BTs resume is still pending the upcoming Tkachuk trade before final verdict on his off season.

Default Brad Treliving needs to go

Too much he’s terrible/he’s not terrible discussion. We want the Flames to win the cup, which means they ought to be a top 5 team. Is Treliving a top 5 GM? I don’t think so. I’ve seen a few rankings put him in the mid-20s, though honestly I don’t know exactly where I’d place him. But if he isn’t one of the best, the results are not among the best, and he’s one of the longest serving GMs, then it’s time to move on. He doesn’t need to be terrible for that assessment to be made.

Wasn't this Burke and he had the Cammalleri debacle ?

Who's the top 5 GM you bring in to replace him?

You realize if Huberdeau doesn't sign an extension this is a major L for the Flames right? Granted if he does sign one Treliving hit this out of the park.

Lets wait and see.

No it's not. Both will fetch a return at the deadline.

This is sneaky good by Tre.

It's risky if that's the play. An injury destroys the return

No...only if he loses him for nothing as UFA, but that will only happen if we're winning the division again.

Well that’s the problem of course. I’m not sure I’d want them to take a chance on another rookie GM and good experienced GMs don’t come available very often.

If he can extend Huberdeau he deserves a parade.
