Well, sure, he could be a great TDL pickup. I figured we are talking using the Valimaki/Kylington money now.

Currently only 12 teams are cap compliant. I know the season hasn't started yet and LTIR relief hasn't kicked in, but this is highly unusual. No?

Last year, for most of the season, less than half of the league was cap compliant. This year things appear to be even worse.
A lot of teams are still saddled with a lot of pre-Covid contracts, signed when they expected the cap to rise much faster. They still have to fill out their rosters with the little money left over. The cap is artificially low, which means more teams can spend to the limit. And escrow is artificially high, which means that teams can budget on getting back a significant percentage of what they spend. It's pretty much the perfect storm for cap trouble.
I expect this to go on until the escrow debt is paid off and the cap goes up by a meaningful amount.

But we must thank Flames ownership for spending to the cap. What a special ownership group.

Finally had completely forgotten about getting screwed by the refs and the command center. Almost fully healed and now back to being 100% certain that no matter how good this new roster is we’re gonna get screwed again on at least one suspension, a called back goal, and I’m going to be sick most nights watching the coil chicken wing and dive their way to wins again.

It’s interesting
Odd circumstances, with everything that’s happened over the last few years. The flat cap caught all teams I suppose.
Lately I’ve wondered, what happens if something happens and almost everyone ends up over the cap?
Mulligan?
If so, where’s the line.
I know I know
Silly thoughts.
But
Yeah
I agree
It seems to me that this is unusual that there are a lot of teams (at this point) that are over the cap.
Is this the mulligan line?
If so, it would be tragic/criminal after the summer our GM pulled off to bring a team into the season that’s:
- arguably better
- full roster
- cap compliant

While most of them can get there with LTIR or close the team I am questioning is Vegas again. Even with Weber and Lehner hitting LTIR I think they are still like 6M over. I wonder what cap circumvention shinanigans the league will allow them to pull this time?

They don't need 9 defencemen. They will send Korczak down to the minors, and Martinez will suffer some kind of long-term injury requiring him to be on LTIR until May. Problem solved.

Not a big deal at all. Taken way too seriously. The posters reaction and comments tell you a lot more about them than the new thread.

They also don't need 18 forwards.
CapFriendly's number for Vegas is based on a 30-man roster (plus four players on IR), which is just kooky.
If they assign the four cheapest forwards, two cheapest D, and third-string goalie, with Lehner and Weber on LTIR, that puts them about a million dollars over the cap. If Brossoit and Patrick aren't ready to go, one of those salaries go on LTIR as well, and if they are, that's two more scrubs who can be demoted.
Vegas is screwed for cap room, but technically compliant.

Not a trade rumour or speculation, but not sure where else to put it. Slafkovsky made the opening day roster for the Habs. Excited to see what this kid does.

and Drouin isn’t in their opening lineup (still on roster).
…I still look at Drouin and think “Sutter can do it. Sutter can get this guy going.”

I’m scared for Habs fans- he was a huge reach at first overall. I don’t think he ends up becoming anything special, especially since they seem keen on rushing him into the NHL

How is it a huge reach to select someone with the following draft rankings?:
2022 Ranked #3 by Elite Prospects
2022 Ranked #1 by ISS Hockey
2022 Ranked #3 by FCHockey
2022 Ranked #2 by TSN/Craig Button
2022 Ranked #3 by McKeen's Hockey
2022 Ranked #1 by TSN/McKenzie
2022 Ranked #1 by NHL Central Scouting

And most of them could probably use at least one more year of seasoning. Owen Power made huge strides last year in college. He looked great coming up at the end of the season.
It’s especially true of prospects that don’t have a long history of huge production. That coupled with the fact where he was apparently very underwhelming in camp makes me think they are rushing him.
I truly believe scouts started nitpicking Shane Wright after watching him for so many years and started chasing the shiny new toy as last season went along.
I’m no expert, but Byron Bader is usually spot on and his model has Slafkovsky with only 12% chance of becoming a star and a 44% chance of becoming a full time player. This is a crucial year for his development and I doubt playing low minutes in the NHL is what is best for him long term.
Bader also said “it’s very rare for players to start in the NHL from the equivalency tier he found himself in when he was drafted”
Kotkaniemi was the last European player to do it and he hasn’t developed well at all.
