So Sutter is rolling him out on the 1st PP only because they are "showcasing" (not a real thing!) him or just trying to pad his points so they can trade him? Pretty sure Sutter would ignore that e-mail from upstairs.

Now this right here is a tremendously objective viewpoint.

Yup, look at all these hockey genius's trying to convince me that Sean Monahan is still a great player at $6.25M on the 4th line contributing the odd secondary PP point. Take your homer glasses off ready, it's embarrassing.

I haven't made a single comment about Monahan. Not one - good or bad. If you can't see, from that fact alone, how biased and emotional you are about this, then I don't know what else to tell you.

I am not bias or emotional at all, I just find it hilarious that posters are arguing Sean Monahan is still the same player he was 3 years ago like Lanny did. None of those things he listed are remotely true and yet posters are arguing they are. It is laughable.

I’m still shocked that anyone can make comparisons just based on raw point totals especially with all the stats available on the same field of view.

Sean Monahan has 5 even strength points in 29 games and sits at a -10

Sam Bennett has 13 even strength points in 26 games and sits at a +12.

I won’t even take salary in to the equation because the comparison would just be downright ridiculous. It’s really not even close. Sam Bennett is the superior player and the braintrust of this organization should feel bad they decided to trade Sam Bennett instead of Sean Monahan.

Honestly, they should’ve looked in to trading Monahan a long time ago while he had even a smidgen of value. Now they’re stuck with an unproductive player at even strength who can’t stop giving up goals with a contract that’s likely improbable to move which will then require a buyout that this team can’t afford.

At this point, I’ve given up on Monahan figuring it out offensively. But there’s no excuse for his terrible defensive play at this point because it’s hurting the team.

If they are looking to trade Monahan, they should play him on the top line and get him some Gaudreau points to prop up his value.

Excellent suggestion. That would pull back Johnny so he is affordable as well lol

That would be a fantastic way to sewer our playoff chances, I am sure Sutter would be on board with that.

They tried that already...it’s been done.

All that got the Flames was early 1st round exit or non-playoff team. If this organization wants to wreck the most vital part of the team (first line) and revert back to last year’s antics, then by all means, they can stick Gaudreau back with that boat anchor.

But if they want to win and go deep, they’ll need to upgrade Monahan’s position. His play right now is holding back the team the most IMO. It’s one thing to be an expensive player who can’t produce, but to constantly spot the other team goals as well, that’s completely counterproductive. He’s given up at least one even strength goal in 5 straight games, that means that some other line (essentially the top line), has to then produce 2 goals to undo, what Monahan’s line did. This is not sustainable, the top line can’t be asked to do this on a regular basis.

If Monahan specifically, cannot be an even player most nights, he needs to go. This team will not go deep if he’s going to be flirting with -30 this season.

No one said Sean Monahan is the same player he was three years ago. What I did say was Monahan still retains many of the same skills he did which still makes him a valuable player. He's seen a decline in some important parts of his game but he still has some very important skills that makes him a valuable player. The Flames need to either find some players to leverage those skills, or move him in a deal for a player that might help out in the short term.

No, he doesn't retain any of the skills that made him a valuable player. He is slower, his shot is definitely not the same, he is not good defensively, he is still soft along the boards, and he can't find those open areas in front of the net to get his shot off. If any of those things still existed he would be a top 6 C on this team still. I am not saying it is his fault, he has been through a bunch of wear and tear but he is a $6M + liability at this point. I think the end result is a buyout of his final year once the season is over.

When I heard that Mony was going to play on the 4th line, I took it as something temporary. I just thought maybe his off-season surgery put him behind the pack in his training, and he just needed time to get caught up and in better game shape. Sutter wouldn't gift top-6 minutes to a guy who wasn't ready to handle the minutes. It's been 30 games now, but I don't think we've seen the end of top-6 Mony-if there's injuries or stagnation, I think he'll get bumped up.

We should trade Mony to Seattle for Gio. Salary is almost a wash, after this year Gio's salary is off the books giving us money to extend our key free agents and Seattle gets a still fairly young C who can use a change of scenery.

Lol anyone who still has brain power for Bennett can suck a fat one.

That guy was nothing buy a detriment to the club, on and off the ice. It is no coincidence that team cohesion and chemistry improved 1000fold as soon as he left. It doesn't matter what he does anywhere else, here he was a 30 point penalty minute hog who had hands of lead and still puck hugged his ass off whenever possible.

I'm so tired of reading people complain about that abject failure.

This makes no sense. Why does Seattle want a 27.5 year old C with a year left on his contract? As opposed to trading Gio at the TDL for a really nice pick? Seattle isn’t upwardly mobile yet and Monahan adds nothing to their window. All they end up doing is trading him at the next TDL for a lesser pick.
