From various scouting reports...his skating isn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be.

I'll pull from my scouting resources too.
ISS on Monahan: Skating is ranked as Good (not Very Good or Excellent). His #1 weakness is overall quickness. "Fine tuning his stride and consistent game pace will be crucial in making a much more seamless transition into the pro game." "Must keep feet moving to reach potential."
FC on Monahan: "Speed and explosiveness are limited with Monahan, he is often able to compensate through his great effort and compete for the puck." "He will need to work on his leg strength as well as improving the first few steps of his skating stride."
Redline on Monahan: "Smooth skating stride with good east-west lateral moves. Good speed and quickness"
Redline who doesn't seem concerned at all about Monahan's skating has him ahead of Lindholm at #6. The other two have Lindholm slightly ahead.

I like the fact that "leg weakness" is an issue with Monahan. That is something that can be fixed. Get him working with a skating coach and working with a strength/conditioning coach, and it will be fixed.
High-Hockey IQ (in Monahan's case - that ranks as one of the best in the draft) is something you can't teach or fix.
I still do prefer Nichushkin at the moment, but I am definitely going to be happy with either of those two or Lindholm. Really hoping for Barkov though *sigh*. Regardless, this draft is going to be a big step forward for the organization, and I am on pins and needles.

Elite hockey sense (which apparently Monahan possesses in great amounts): specifically the ability to read the play and put yourself in the right place at the right time to be impactful, and set up plays that culminate in goals or the prevention of goals against, is something that can't be taught, and can make up for a lot of other deficiencies. It also keep players producing until late in their careers, (prime example: Tanguay-strictly speaking hockey sense, not a comparison). That combined with a strong two-way game and 6'2 frame... plus strong leadership attributes and experience captaining a team... Canadian... idolizes, as has been compared to... Jonathan Toews...
I'm sorry, but despite these little "media personality" kerfuffles, no amount of it can deter me from wanting this guy to put on the Flames jersey tomorrow one BIT!
The end.

Interestingly enough ISS rates Monahan's hockey sense as merely "Very Good" while rating Lindholm's as "Excellent". Barkov, Nichushkin, Drouin and Jones also received the "Excellent" rating. And so did Shinkaruk, Ristolainen, Santini, Domi and Heatherington.

Interesting! I didn't catch that at all. I wonder which outlet is more accurate about Monahan's hockey sense.
Also, as per Button's interview on the Flames' site, he mentioned something along the lines of: "This year since we have 3 first round picks, we can gamble on a guy with a higher ceiling that we normally wouldn't, and have the two other picks supporting him."
I wonder if he is implying the gamble would be Nichushkin. I wonder if the gamble would even be at 6? Maybe the gamble is one of the other two picks? Perhaps someone like Petan? Really curious at what pick he implies the gamble to be at.

I have my own little favourite in this draft, even though he will go later (ranked 28th among European skaters by CSS).
Peter Cehlarik plays for Luleå Hockey (which is why I'm biased in his favour ) and did really well this season when he received some icetime with the big boys.
He made 8 apps with LHF and scraped together three goals and three assists. More detailed stats here.
He stands at 188 cm / 6'2" above the ground, is from Slovakia, and has fronted the Slovakian U18 team. He's got fairly good vision and is a pretty decent passer.
Biggest downside? He's probably not the fastest guy around. As trivia, I also think that he might be a Blackhawks-fan.
I would be absolutely thrilled if the Flames picked this guy.
Here's an additional profile of the guy.

Pretty soft guy. He doesn't play physical at all.

Funny, I read he has the highest hockey sense / "IQ" after MacKinnon.
With Linholm not far behind.

Lol, we should draft Brodeurs son and right the wrongs of trading down and draft Kidd instead of Marty.

The Canes take Nichuskin if he's there at #5 is what I keep hearing. If they do pass on him I feel like the Flames cannot pass on him. He has #1 overall talent. Sometimes the risk is simply worth the reward.

1st overall talent in which year? Certainly not this year.

DarrenHaynes_CP CruickshankCHDefinition of "Found Money" - 25% of the #Flames draft picks today are the result of the trading away of Henrik Karlsson and Blake Comeau.

25% of the coins lying around on my dresser are pennies, which aren't even legal currency anymore. So much for 'found money'.
