I don't know this guy (my best friend was from Miramichi, though!), but I saw this on the news last night and was blown away by his work:

https://www.ctvnews.ca/atlantic/new-...-step-further/

Quote:
If you look closely at Derek Burchill’s model ship, The Victory, it’s not hard to see exactly why it’s been a project 18 years in the making.

“The fancy furniture on it, the cannons and making the blocks, you know, the ropes go through ... you’re talking half a millimetre, a millimetre in size,” he explained.

“One piece, for instance, that I showed you, the curve piece, that took me a month to figure it. It was just so difficult to get all those twists and get it right, but that’s the way it goes.”

In total, the Miramichi, N.B., man has completed 16 model ships throughout his lifetime, some even with 36 working mechanisms, but The Victory is extra special.

The original idea was to use a WWI-era Dreadnought for the centrepiece, but the model was a gift during the holidays so it got the nod; after my last carrier build I thought I wouldn't do another one, but it ended up working out better than expected. Used a new technique for the sea surface - toilet paper soaked in a water-glue solution - and it actually worked better than my old tin foil technique. Cotton balls made up the fire.

This one was a TON of fun to build. Lots of detail here, so there's a lot of photos to look at:

Spoiler!
I dont even know what to say.

This might be the greatest thing ever? A family of inexplicably fire-breathing rubber duckies attacking an Aircraft carrier?

I...I am speechless. I literally rolled on the floor laughing.

Now I'm thinking this is an idea that must be sold to Hollywood.

"Giant Space Ducks attack Earth and only the US Navy can save us!"

I mean...they've made dumber ####! Its essentially the plot of Independence Day...but with Ducks. Fire-breathing ducks. I'm sure they can do other things too.

Fair warning! If for any reason he decides to sell that, I demand 'right of first refusal!'

Well, a movie based on this couldn't be any worse than "Battleship" was.

edit: I actually had an uncontrollable fit of laughter when the fire went on the lead duck - the whole thing was so over the top ridiculous that I couldn't hold it back.

I just love their lifeless dead eyes...I dont know why, it just really sells it.

"This is what is happening now. This is your life now. Accept it. Embrace it. You probably didn't wake up this morning envisioning an invasion of giant fire-breathing rubber duckies...but this is just how it is now."

That was a classic and you know it! You replace the space aliens with the fire-breathing rubber duckies and that is Box-Office Gold!

You're a certifiable lunatic.

And I'm here for it. I'm all about it.

Okay...can you do me a favour Puppet?

Can you just try and get one, full on photo of it with nothing else around? Just a nice clean shot?

I want to make that my desktop background!

And then we begin the 'Competition' for naming the Ducks and then its 'Caption Contest' time!!

"Okay kids, gather 'round, we're all going on a picnic just as soon as your father torches the hell out of this aircraft carrier! We all know theres bread in there you bastards! Give it up!! Feed the Ducks!"

PG, how do you work the TP/glue into waves? The detail looks amazing.

I also love that the aircraft are identifiable... Pretty sweet F-4 Phantom and A-6 Intruder.

The waves are really simple - you apply the glue/water mix with a paintbrush, and when it's wet enough just push it into the shape you want with a brush handle and let it dry. Easy and effective.

Edit: There are a ton of great videos on YouTube that demo the process. This is one that I used:

Can anyone recommend a furniture repair guy / place for antique wooden furniture? Got an old antique chair that was damaged by careless movers...

How bad is the damage? Finish repair or actual woodworking needs?

I’ve never really explored doing repair work, it’s outside my skill set but I’d recommend speaking with Mike at All Pro Furniture Finishing.

If it’s cosmetic, he will be able to handle it, if it needs to be more invasive he should have a recommendation of who to speak with.

Good luck

Part of the back broke, which appears to be an old repair. I'll contact Mike and see what he says.

So, I can't take credit for this but my sister got into making acrylic knicknacks with a focus on skulls. I had one on my desk which I used to keep my pens in.

Anyways, my clients came in this morning and LOVED it and offered to buy it, so I figured...'why not?' So I sold it to them and gave her the money.

She gets exposure and some money and it costs me nothing. Other than my pen holder...which I won't lie, I'd become accustomed to and kind of miss.

But I figured I'd throw this out to you guys.

If you want to feature your creations with an aim to selling them or just want some exposure, about 2000 people are going to wander through my office in the next 2 months.

So if anyone is interested in putting their stuff out there, I want to say that you're welcome to do so, as long as it isn't offensive, but you guys seem like a pretty cool group so that doesnt seem too risky.

Just PM me and we can arrange something.

I'll be up-front, I take $0. Nothing. I'm just offering to showcase your cool stuff to a ton of people if you're interested in selling it.

I charge nothing. I take nothing. Hell, I'll probably be the guy buying the cool stuff if nothing else.

I'd only ask...Contact Info, Payment Info and please...I've gotten into this with my sister a million times...if you want to sell something, please indicate for how much, otherwise I have to make it up and I have no idea what some of this stuff is worth.

Any interest?

Neighbours are going to be so confused when they see a massive uptick in people going to a tax office who then walking out with random stuff.

I am nothing if not an Agent of Chaos!

Naw...the people in here make awesome stuff, and my sister was paying criminal rates for a table at Christmas markets.

F### that! I've got space and 'Makers' need a place to display, otherwise how does anyone know?

I have two photos on my wall that were gifts to me and I display the photographer's business card beneath them in case anyone else wants a print. My sister's stuff is here. Why not other people?

Oh! And I should mention, if you or others know of or have old accounting equipment, I'd love to see it!

You guys would love my office!
