If you look closely at Derek Burchill’s model ship, The Victory, it’s not hard to see exactly why it’s been a project 18 years in the making.
“The fancy furniture on it, the cannons and making the blocks, you know, the ropes go through ... you’re talking half a millimetre, a millimetre in size,” he explained.
“One piece, for instance, that I showed you, the curve piece, that took me a month to figure it. It was just so difficult to get all those twists and get it right, but that’s the way it goes.”
In total, the Miramichi, N.B., man has completed 16 model ships throughout his lifetime, some even with 36 working mechanisms, but The Victory is extra special.

So I don't know if this was inspired by a classified naval battle, a fever dream or whatever, but just enjoy it for what it is: an aircraft carrier being attacked by a flotilla of fire-breathing rubber ducks!
The original idea was to use a WWI-era Dreadnought for the centrepiece, but the model was a gift during the holidays so it got the nod; after my last carrier build I thought I wouldn't do another one, but it ended up working out better than expected. Used a new technique for the sea surface - toilet paper soaked in a water-glue solution - and it actually worked better than my old tin foil technique. Cotton balls made up the fire.
This one was a TON of fun to build. Lots of detail here, so there's a lot of photos to look at:

I mean...they've made dumber ####! Its essentially the plot of Independence Day...but with Ducks. Fire-breathing ducks. I'm sure they can do other things too.

Well, a movie based on this couldn't be any worse than "Battleship" was.
edit: I actually had an uncontrollable fit of laughter when the fire went on the lead duck - the whole thing was so over the top ridiculous that I couldn't hold it back.

PG, how do you work the TP/glue into waves? The detail looks amazing.
I also love that the aircraft are identifiable... Pretty sweet F-4 Phantom and A-6 Intruder.
The waves are really simple - you apply the glue/water mix with a paintbrush, and when it's wet enough just push it into the shape you want with a brush handle and let it dry. Easy and effective.
Edit: There are a ton of great videos on YouTube that demo the process. This is one that I used:

So, I can't take credit for this but my sister got into making acrylic knicknacks with a focus on skulls. I had one on my desk which I used to keep my pens in.
Anyways, my clients came in this morning and LOVED it and offered to buy it, so I figured...'why not?' So I sold it to them and gave her the money.
She gets exposure and some money and it costs me nothing. Other than my pen holder...which I won't lie, I'd become accustomed to and kind of miss.
But I figured I'd throw this out to you guys.
If you want to feature your creations with an aim to selling them or just want some exposure, about 2000 people are going to wander through my office in the next 2 months.
So if anyone is interested in putting their stuff out there, I want to say that you're welcome to do so, as long as it isn't offensive, but you guys seem like a pretty cool group so that doesnt seem too risky.
Just PM me and we can arrange something.
I'll be up-front, I take $0. Nothing. I'm just offering to showcase your cool stuff to a ton of people if you're interested in selling it.
I charge nothing. I take nothing. Hell, I'll probably be the guy buying the cool stuff if nothing else.
