I'd like to thank Brossoit for putting up back to back shutouts in the ECHL driving his value up, despite poor numbers in the AHL. Perfect example of selling high by Feaster.

Why would we turn around and flip either? We need defensive depth and experience; by bringing in Smid, the team takes pressure off Wideman to play 30 minutes a night. When Gio comes back, the blue line is that much stronger.
No need to deal Smid or Wideman. They both have valuable roles to play on this team.

Smid's value does not go up a whole lot at the trade deadline.
the concept of value going up at the trade deadline is that a team can get a 3.5 M player that fits under their cap for less than a Million cap hit (1/4) of a season.
In Smid's case the team has to deal with his next 3 years at 3.5M.
Smid's highest value will be the week after the UFA opens. The teams that lost out on the top UFA D-men and still have their cap space would likely appreciate Smid at 3.5M.
right now the Flames were one of 6 teams that had the 3.5 cap space sitting around waiting for Smid.
The Flames still have a lot of cap space to mess with Edmonton by keep any other teams salary dump competitive. For instance if the Flyers want to salary dump someone like Luke Schenn or Coburn they would check with the Flames before they accepted the Edmonton offer.

Wait a second. You're always saying that our prospects are crap and have no hope of playing in the NHL. So giving up a forward buried behind eight other guys at his natural position, and a goaltender buried behind three other guys, certainly is as close to nothing as there is. I swear, you take a contrary position just to be a dick.

Oh come on, really?
As for the trade, we'll have to wait and see how Brossoit does ultimately I think. But Roy could turn out to be a surprise, so who knows?

I don't think we need to sell Horak and Broissot short to make this a good trade. Horak might turn out to be a good 3rd/4th liner. Broissot might turn out to be a half decent starter. If so, I still like the deal for us, I think Smid makes our D a lot more well rounded.

For those that somehow think this trade is contrary to rebuilding, here is a comparison of our D corp from last year and this year (ages are current):
Sarich 35
Bouwmeester 30
Giordano 30
Wideman 30
Smith 29
Butler 27
Brodie 23
Giordano 30
Wideman 30
O'Brien 30
Smid 27
Butler 27
Russell 26
Brodie 23
Adding Smid solidifies the D, allowing the organization the time to develop the kids properly instead of rushing them into the lineup.

The Flames traded Bouwmeester as one of the two trades to launch the rebuild and the current D is probably already better - at the very least, it is just as good.

I am not always saying that at all but good job trying to put words in my mouth rather than addressing the actual issue.
And I agree with the majority that this is a good trade so how am taking a contrary position.
The Flames gave up two prospects they may be "buried" as you suggest and they may not be top level prospects but they have value and potential. All I said is that saying the gave up nothing is wrong. Not sure how that makes me contrary and not even sure how that is close to being wrong or something someone would argue.
Giving up nothing would be a 7th round pick or future considerations. The Oilers get two guys that could very well play for the team at some point.

Why would the Flyers salary dump Coburn when they could get something of value for him?

“Obviously I was shocked,” said Smid. “But I know this is always a possibility. I’ve talked to my family, I’ve talked to my wife and we’re excited about a new start.”
. ..
“This is a deal that I had difficulty with,” said Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish. “We talk about creating a new culture of hard work and selfness and rewarding that and Ladislav definitely falls in that category.

Smid goes to a team that he’s had epic battles with, particularly with Flames captain Mark Giordano.
The two have fought three times in the numerous encounters between the team.
“Yeah, that’s going to be fun playing with him,” Smid said. “We’ve had a lot of battles over the years. But he’s a really good guy and a great captain for the team.”
|
Well, I guess I admire his truthfulness. Smid was hard working,so as a reward for that, he traded him to the Flames.

Oilers Trade Smid for Magic Beans
Quote:
The problem is... oh what the ####'s the point?! You know what the problem is! The problem is that the Oilers have once again traded an established NHL player for once again guys who, if we're very lucky, will become nearly as good as Smid, once again sacrificing play at a position where they absolutely cannot afford to sacrifice it, all once again out of the hope that something good will somehow come of trading decent players for inferior ones. We have finally reached the point which people like me have been warning of for seven years, where the young players that we acquired because we had to trade our veterans have become veterans we have to trade to acquire young players
|
Quote:
This is more of the same old Oilers, yet another trade that amounts to saying "don't worry, slugger, we'll get 'em next time", and as somebody who wanted Steve Tambellini drawn and quartered for years, seeing Craig MacTavish pulling the same tricks has convinced the small part of my brain that still knew about hope that this entire coprophagic organization needs to be napalmed until nothing remains but the cinders and a small patch of horrible hair that used to be Daryl Katz.

The fact that we still care for a team led by crooks and windmill-tilting imbeciles of the first rank is a testament to the sheer, bloody-minded irrationality of man. If any of us had a hint of logic in our hockey-loving heads we'd have long ago found a more rewarding hobby, like heroin.

Does anyone know if you can be over the cap because of bonuses during the year? Or do you have to the end of the year to shed some cap space and come under the cap?
Just wondering if they really did have to trade Smid to make room for Bryz. They didnt have to by the hard cap numbers.
And is there any idea of much of the proposed bonuses they might ahve had to pay this year??
