I still don't get what your issue is. He was brought on to talk about the trade. He talked about it. Now you're upset that he used too many words to describe the trade or something?

Horak wasn't a natural RWer so suggesting this trade demolishes our RW depth is a bit much. Wouldn't surprise me if he moves back to centre for the Oilers.
At some point we'll have to play some wingers on their off wing. But that isn't totally uncommon in the NHL. Hudler is a leftie who's played a lot of RW for us and has looked just fine doing it.
And of course we can always trade somebody at some point for a natural RWer.
Ashasx seems to have the typical HF mentality going in this thread, whoever gets the prospects wins. Reliable defensemen are quite valuable so I think we got great value for Horak (a guy I really like) and Brossoit. Two decent but expendable prospects for a legit defenseman. Now we don't have to prematurely put guys like Wotherspoon and Sieloff into the fire before they're ready.

They have Nurse, Klefbom, and Musil as big D in the minors, and are going to have the opportunity to draft another one half a year from now.
My biggest fear is they draft enough #1 overall that they eventually can't help but get it right. My first thought when I read about this was they are going to get Reinhardt AND McDavid - two more first overall picks = The Drive for Five.

Barring teams going "off the list" no better than a 1/16 chance of this happening.

Why are we claiming this trade a win? Yes, Horak is a lifetime AHLer, but it's too early to right of Broissot.
Smid still has 3 years left in his contract, more than improving us, we helped Etown out of cap jail. Why do this?

Here's what I got from the quote:
- MacTavish and Feaster started the trade discussions for Smid three weeks ago
- MacT then let Feaster know what players he wanted from Calgary
- Feaster then had to decide if it was worth it for Smid
- They thought the deal might have happened a week ago
- The deal went quiet for a while, and then the Oilers were ready to make it happen
What else were you looking for about the timing of the deal from that quote? I think it gives quite a few points.

Seriously?
The team gave up nothing and got a top four defender in return. Horak is more likely to play for the Oilers than Brossoit. Brossoit was the third or fourth best goaltender in the Flames system, so to suggest he's going to be a good NHL goaltender should bode well for the Flames three guys ahead of him.
Did we really help the Oilers out of cap jail? They had to move Smid to sign Bryzgalov and are now at the 50 contract limit. Seems to me they didn't get much help and we got better because of the deal. At best the Oilers are in a position where they can make another deal, but it is going to have to be a balanced deal contract wise, which doesn't help them much.

No matter how you spin it this is a win by the Flames.....like try to contain your smile when signing the paper type win.
Broissot was playing in Alaska, nice player but meh prospect.

The only thing more amazing than this post is that someone actually thanked it.
We got the best player - by a long shot
He is still pretty young and his cap hit is at worst decent, but I would call it a bit of a bargain.
No one wrote off Brossoit, but the chances of a 20 year old G prospect becoming an NHL starter is probably less than 20%
Brossoit is not as good of a prospect as Gillies, and Ortio has shown that he is also higher on the depth charts
The Oilers spent that cap room on Bryzgalov and are still in cap jail
This trade makes the Flames better and the Oilers worse. How can a trade be any better than that?!?

There are win-win trades. Some trades are lose-lose...
Well the oilers obviously lost...
The Oilers are an awful defensive team that should have been competing for a playoff spot. Further, they lack character and a team orientation. They have a lot of me first players. So what do they do? They trade away a high character, team oriented, top 4, defensive-defenseman.
The Flames...
The flames got a 27 year old defenseman who is a top 4 and can play minutes. But they are in a rebuild, so if anything this trade makes them better may just prolong a rebuild. And, and by time the flames are actually ready to compete, Smid may have left have left via free agency, and Horak may be in the prime of his NHL career. Or, Smid may teach Brodie and Russel how to play better hockey. And Cundari. And Seiloff. And he might re-up and only be 30 by the time the rebuild is complete. So I'm mixed on this one.
So either this is win-lose in the flame's favour. Or its lose-lose. But Edmonton surely lost. Cuz the management up there is grossly incompetent.

The Calgary Flames head coach was so excited about the addition of defenceman Ladislav Smid in Friday’s surprising swap with the Edmonton Oilers that he might have even offered to pick him up and tour him around the city.
“There’s no Mr. Casual in him. He’s a warrior,” Hartley said after Friday’s 4-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche. “I talked to him and he was so glad about the trade. He’s a guy that shows up at home, shows up on the road. He’s an in-your-face defenceman. He’s a stand-up guy. He’s not afraid to stand up in a room and say what he has to say, and after this, he backs it.
“He’s an unbelievable worker and he’s a big-sized defenceman, so that’s a great addition for us.”

What I find interesting is that now the Flames have four top 4 defenseman. Now we could easily ship out one of Wideman or Smid for picks at the deadline.
If we make a great deal in spring, we may have just turned Horak and Brossoit into a first round pick.

I love how Smid responded with the typical "Oh, I'm sad to leave my former team, but excited about my new team" politically correct reponse in the media, then Bob Hartley spilled the beans on his actual thoughts in that quote.

It is odd that some people are complaining about the deal, but there is no need to go so far over the other way and say we gave up nothing.

getting edmonton out of cap jail, was the means to acquiring a quality d-man for a very low price. these are the types of trades flames fans have been crying out for, for years now. And yes edmonton had a cap situation, and what calgary just did was take advantage of that situation.
If you want to be spiteful toward our rival, think of it this way, we exploited edmonton.
advantage flames.

After taking a second to think about it, this is a good trade.
Whoever says Horak is a lifetime AHLer must have some nice crystal ball. The kid already earned himself a spot in the NHL once before when younger, so pretty dumb. Broisott played great, but how exciting is it to stockpile goalie prospects... Just steal a UFA sometime down the road.
A top 4 defenseman with his size is definitely a large asset! Think about our current D prospects coming up, it would be a huge success for any to turn into top 2 or top 4 D pairings. So.. we just picked one up that's gone through the development years. nice
