Right, but the agent is the proxy for the player. And Weegar is under contract for another 7 seasons, so unless there is a tax advantage in Ottawa versus Calgary, I don't see how that makes sense.
lol

I'm down for Andersson to get moved over Weegar. Rasmus had a terrible year last year, and yet 29 other teams would be interested to have him. Weegar seems more responsible, reliable, and a good mentor for upcoming blueliners. Plus he wants to be in Calgary (apparently) and has a respectable contract.
I think Rasmus could get us a Top-10 pick.

What? Ya, nice of the agent to be thinking of Weegar's next pay day in 7 years when he's 38. He's definitely gonna get paid!

I get what you're saying, but to me, this team ain't winning anything with this current group of vets. I think Weegar might be my current favorite Flame, but if we can ship him out for a top 10 pick, then I'll drive him to the airport.

Most likely if it is true then Weegar probably wants to go to Ottawa and he is letting his agent be the hatchet man

Also agents are advocates for their clients so maybe it's just that the agent sees the writing on the wall with respect to Calgary's current trajectory and knows that Ottawa would love to get their hands on him (which we've heard for over a year now) and thinks it would be a more competitive/better situation in the short/medium term.
|
I see you beat me to the punch in the agent question.
Have to think Weegar would be open and excited to join a team and leave another that are headed in the opposite direction. Especially at 30 years old and having just watched many of his good buddies lift the cup.

If you can get a top-ten pick for Weegar, you do have to consider it of course. Unfortunately for some here, you still have to ice an NHL team, and Weegar brings qualities to the locker room that will greatly benefit the youth movement. You can't ice a team of 18-year-olds and expect them to move mountains; you still need SOME veteran leadership - especially ones that wear their hearts on their sleeves and can show them how to be professionals on and off the ice.

Huberdeau
Kadri
Coleman
Backlund
Andersson
....
Then you have other players:
Mangiapane
Sharangovich
Kuzmenko
Rooney
Vladar
...
That should be more than enough "veteran presence" for the young players. If not, then what the heck are half those players still doing on the roster. I also assume the Flames will either sign or trade for a few more veteran players still.

Sure, but the Flames are in a very different position than Utah.
Utah is looking at year 1 of their franchise. And they have a young team full of talent. A good defenseman added to their roster, and they have a VERY good chance of making the playoffs.
You want to build a fanbase? You need to get into the playoffs. That is why VGS and SEA solidified their fanbases so quickly, and also why PHO never got off the ground. For Utah, making the playoffs is HUGELY valuable, far more valuable than the #6 pick.

If Weegar is traded, how many of those first five vets listed are changing their minds about wanting to play in Calgary?

We have enough vets I think that could play that role. You can also sign a couple of "good in the locker room" type of players to fill out the roster.

Yup, he has all the vet presence money locked up. He should start brushing up on his coaching skills now.
I also think Backlund is going to go for the Flames legacy records before he is out

This is the ultimate time to sell high on Weegar. He had 20g and 52p last year and he's in his prime right now. His previous best was 8 goals.
Losing him would be a very tough loss for the morale and leadership of the team. I'd way rather trade Rasmus; however, we need blue chip prospects more than anything.

Weegar changed agents a year ago after his uncle got him the 8 year extension
https://flamesnation.ca/news/amp/cal...anged-agencies
Weegar is the last of the veterans I want the flames to move. I feel like he is the next captain of the team. If Ottawa is offering the 7+ then I look at it no doubt but to me they have Weegar on a sweetheart deal and reminds me of the Giordano of this rebuild.
Open to any veteran being traded but Rasmus tops the list
