I was surprised how much I liked Indy. It was of course not nearly as good as Raiders, but up there with Last Crusade. It blew Crystal Skull out of the water.

Yeah, for example reviews like this

They go off on Waller Bridge at 5:45

Just ridiculous commentary that's laughably dramatic and unearned.

I haven't seen this movie yet but Phoebe Waller-Bridge is definitely reason I would want to see this movie as my wife and I absolutely loved Fleabag. Without giving much in the way of the story what's the problem people have with her in this movie?

She is only hotter than their GF/wives/pillows; and not unrealistically hotter than their GF/wives/pillows

It's not like Karen Allen was a runway model in the day and that didn't hinder Raiders of the Lost Ark in any way.

I haven't seen it, so i can't actually comment outside of the tongue-in-cheek comment about her appearance.

Hm. Well...I'll reserve judgement until I see it because something about this stinks.

Based on what I've seen of her other work, Waller Bridge is a goddamned fantastic actress. People may hate her in this movie but....are they supposed to? Is that how that character was written and directed to be depicted?

I've absolutely loathed actors and actresses in movies and TV, but normally that just means that those actors did their jobs exceptionally well.

Perfect example was Joffrey in GoT. I HATED him. I know he's just an actor doing a job and by all IRL accounts is a pretty nice, standup guy...but the way his character was written and directed? He murdered that role. I dont think anyone else could have played it better.

So, its an Indiana Jones film, Waller Bridge is a top-shelf actress so I doubt she phoned it in which would be a legitimate complaint, but I watched a couple minutes of those clowns on the youtube video bitching about the character, etc.

But Waller Bridge isnt 'the character' she's just playing it as its written and as she's directed.

My take is I guess Sliver listens to backstreet boys because the singers are hot. Musicianship be damned

It's a surprise that Meryl Streep can still find work given that audiences go to the theater explicitly to see lead actresses who are hot enough on the Universal Dude Bro Scale to carry a movie.

Saw the movie. It was fine. Fourth best in the series which is a very low hurdle to jump.
As for PWB, she played the character well. All the chatter about her specifically has some definite incel vibes.
As for Joffrey in GoT, you were supposed to hate him. So they nailed it there. The PWB character was quite unlikeable in context to what the character was to serve in the story.

I think they tried hard to make a strong female character but completely missed the point of what that means.

It's like her character should have existed in a completely different movie. It was weird and didn't work for me.

I’m interested in Indy but “better than Crystal Skull” isn’t a great endorsement

Problem for me is the Indy films were about a kick ass adventurer and are now about an old dude who used to be a kick ass adventurer. Makes for a completely different film.

I’m open for a full reboot. Surely they can dig up some of Lucas’ old notes and make a new trilogy set in the 40s. Would even be happy with a Young Indy streaming show.

Because I'm literally reading this coming out of a a movie theater with a bunch of summer blockbuster -type movies available, and having just seen trailers for all of them, I don't think any of them are going down that path. (Obviously the whole main cast in every movie is more or less hot.)

There was the new Indy, new F&F, new Transformers, and Flash. (Then a bunch of animations, some horror, some arthousey/indie movie stuff and what I guess is a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence. (Who's name was more prominent on the trailer than the movie's title.))
All those blockbuster movies have also been various levels of box office disappointments. What’s projected to do well in July? Mission Impossible and Barbie, both starring and marketing their beautiful women. Just saying…

Tom Cruise is pretty, but I wouldn't call him a beautiful woman.

Going by 2023 box office numbers, fans want their female leads to either be animated or covered in blue/green makeup.

Are you saying she didnt get enough screen-time in Robocop?

Yeah having seen the trailer multiple times, arguing that they're marketing with the woman in the trailer is an incredible stretch

As for PWB in Indy, I didn't care for her character, which was a problem for the movie. How much of that is her fault is hard to say, but I didn't leave the theater convinced that someone else couldn't have done it better. She did seem like a genuinely potential adventurer, someone physically capable, quick witted etc, which for example is something Ana de Armas (a really hot actor) couldn't sell me on in Ghosted. (There's an example of a recent movie that didn't succeed based on the "let's make sure the actors are super hot" formula.) I think the problem was more that the chemistry between her character and Indy wasn't interesting. It felt like the movie had two protagonists with very different vibes. I would absolutely watch a cheesy adventure movie with PVB as the lead.

They should've probably given her character a love interest in the movie. The kid was fine but didn't really add anything, I would much rather have some bumbling but lovable archeology student in his place. These movies usually had someone bumbling around Indy for light comedy, I think that's another element they mostly missed.

EDIT: The movie also could have used that more incompetent/normal character who's alternately impressed, flabbergasted and shocked by the shenanigans of the main characters. If we're talking about movie formula stuff they didn't use here, that's another thing left out.

New Indy was pretty bad. I'd give it a 6/10. It was pretty boring. A lot of “so bad it's good” parts in the movie that were good for a laugh. I think Harrison Ford is insanely overrated though so whatever.

Not at all, just look at the poster:

Spoiler for size maybe

Spoiler!

Aside from Cruise, obviously top billing as the main character, producer of the movie, and one of the biggest stars in the world, all it's attractive female co-stars have the next biggest and most prominent placement.
