Not even sure a team would be willing to do that as Hayes was probably better at the time he was traded.

Not quite the same but understand what you are saying. I guess I see it as getting a 22 yr old forward who scored 16 goals averaging 11 mins of ice time and is in the doghouse with his team, getting a 10 overall pick to draft a high- end player for the cost of an extra $6MM for one season and a highly overpaid 28 yr old winger only retaining one year.
I don't think Markstrom on his own gets 10 overall, and I don't think a retained Mangiapane gets Holtz on its own.

With retention on Marky and Palat coming back I think NJD would have to add to the 24 1st and Mercer.
We’d be fixing two problems for them. Goaltending and removing a boat anchor contract.

Why not add both Hughes brothers and Nemec while you are at it?
Palat had down year, but the dude is a gamer and a total stud in the playoffs. That's why they signed him to that contract. The Devils need a LHD for the 2nd pairing way more than they need to move Palat.

This is good news, hopefully the Devils see the value in keeping Palat.

Where is all this Palat news coming from?? Why would he waive his NMC to leave NJ for Calgary?

Palat
Frees up longer term cap for NJ, with a good chance to sign Mangiapane to a reduced contract going forward. Really adds on yr at $6MM for the Flames since the Markstrom and Palat contract balance.
|
I don't like it. Selling low on Mangiapane, taking back a bad contract that doesn't fit where this team is.
Before you say, just rehab and flip Palat, why not do that with Mangiapane?

A good agent would tell his client that teams like NJ and Ott are (potentially) about to pop

I see no reason for New Jersey to want Andrew Mangiapane.
There is zero need to make this deal complicated bringing in junk like Palat.
We can send Mangipane packing at the deadline.

I should know this and this is a dumb question... but can trades happen with playoffs still going? Wouldn't making trades be unfair to the two teams in the SCF? Though maybe the oilers/panthers can still make trades too, the players just can't suit up for them this season. You don't hear about trades at this time of year, but maybe the timing just isn't right.

Teams can trade after the deadline I believe as well, the players just can't play for you.

I heard the Devils would be willing to send us the Hughes Brothers and Nemec as well.

The "Trade Deadline" is only a trade deadline for players that you want to play for you that season.
For teams that are already eliminated, that's not a negative incentive anymore.
In fact, every draft day trade is a "post trade deadline" trade, because the next season always starts on Free agency day.
Generally it doesn't happen, because there is little urgency to make a trade when the GMs like to emjoy their little bit of time off.

They say it doesn't happen because the league frowns on the diversion from the cup yet I've seen it happen before.

It tends to happen when there is more of a pinch point (ie. signing bonus, NTC kicks in, pre. buyout window, etc) but rarely for more hockey trades.
I think overall the league prefers to be able to make more of a splash.

Isn't taking on a bad contract that's over during the rebuild exactly where this team is?
